When I bought our house buildings & contents insurance back in Novemebr I told the girl that we may be away from home for long periods and needed to be covered whilst we were away and she said it would be ok as long as I phoned and told them before we went away.
So, as we will be away for 11 weeks at the end of July I rang them up to tell them and and I was told that after 30 days we would not be covered for ....
Theft, Forced entry, Malicious damage, escape of water, theft from garden & outbuildings or accidental damage, also after 30 days our pedal cycles and possesions would not be covered for theft whilst we had them with us on our trip.

I could however "buy" extra cover for £35 to re-instate all these for the time we would be away and had to ensure that the house was visited at least once a week to be checked.
It wan't too bad as the house insurance (with Aviva) was a good price for the year anyway but speaking to a few other people they have said they never thought to check this out.

Our policy (with Tesco) covers us for up to 60 days but many do have a 30 day limit. We came across the problem after my aunt died. That is despite her flat being in a managed block of retirement flats which has high security locks on both main and flat doors plus CCTV &c.

My brother (who just happens to be a partner in a firm of city solicitors and who specialises in insurance law) pointed out to the broker "As a preliminary point the XXXXX letter seems to confirm that regrettably modern household insurers no longer assess and underwrite individual risks, in that they have clearly sent out a standard letter much of which does not apply to this risk." but it made no difference to the insurer's attitude.

60 days is not common and longer cover is very difficult to get from the outset (I've looked!) As I said my insurance was at a very good price so having to pay an extra £35 was still a lot cheaper than some policies.
I am now looking at medical cover for the trip and most of them only go up to 90 days before the premium soars sky high!

hi certainly most in know that get away for winter dont bother with health insurance .use the nh card that took over from the e111. many couldnt get it anyway .if you have anything slightly wrong now they just refuse point blank. personally i havent bothered with health insurance for years .seemed good years ago when going on package tours but now 6 months away the cost is daft. you can visit a chemist or a local health center while in the eu . i have and had very good service. one mate broke his wrist a couple of years ago in morocco .only cost 100quid for doctors ex ray and plaster cast . even that is cheaper than his quote for health insurance.

We do take e111 card so not too worried about that but it's more for repatriation if something serious. We know doRome who had a stroke in Spain and cannot get back to uk as only has e111 and specialist medical travel was too much for them to find.
Also if you know my hubby you will know about all the extreme things he does!!!

we are currently looking after a house for a friend who has gone away for a few weeks.
maybe if you had a friend that would look after it for you then you have less worries whilst away and reassurance on the end of the phone.

while it may not cover long term I suggest

While it may not cover as long as you want ADAC has a degree of medical cover and has it's own air ambulance (jet) ... we use the E111 as like a lot my previous medical condition will not allow me to get cover.
