We are heading towards Hardangerfjord , our book tells us it is known for its orchards on the side of the fjord.

Our route takes us through an 8km tunnel with....a roundabout partway along it o_O

We decide to head to Ulvik which is at the end of Ulvikfjorden , it has an apple route along the edge. We stop for a couple of nights overlooking the fjord (camper contact 19053 ) , this is our view.
IMG_20170603_180555.jpg

It's a fantastic spot and the weather looks to be improving so we head up for a walk among the orchards just outside Ulvik. I think we have missed the main bloom but still some apples are coming into blossom.
IMG_20170603_110819.jpg

These are interesting, bee hives that seem to be in insulated boxes.
IMG_20170603_111955.jpg

A last minute decision finds us hopping onto a ferry to Eidfjord, we are their only passengers there and back ! On the way out they pull close to a waterfall and stick a bucket underneath so we can try a glass of the local water.

A nice trip in the sunshine along the fjord.

Hmmmm well it was nice but it's served cold which felt odd (aka wrong) in a pancake. I would give it a 6 but we would like to try it again just to be sure :)

One last trip along the fjord, through the 8km long tunnel with the roundabout in it.
IMG_20170604_111806.jpg

Over a bridge that appears to cost £15.
IMG_20170604_111920.jpg

We head to Odda, this seems to be a big place for motorhomes to stop off(camper contact 15199). It's by no means the nicest fjord stop off spot and it's a bit damp and grey but the camperstop is full by mid evening.

IMG_20170605_105438.jpg

From here you could leave the fjords and simply head south 340km to get the ferry at Kristiansand. (I provide that info for @DavidG58 :)).

We still have time to explore and so we are off to the Telemark region instead.

We love the film 'The heroes of Telemark' and so of course we plan a trip to the area and to Vemork.

The drive to it takes us through ski resorts and we can see why the heavy water factory was so difficult to sabotage in WW2. It's in a deep valley near Rjukan.
IMG_20170605_143151.jpg

The only way in is via this bridge and then a 1km walk up to the factory which is now a museum.
IMG_20170605_160848.jpg

Having ticked that off we park up for the night nearby at the Krossobanen cable car (camperstop 24230).
IMG_20170605_185128.jpg

Rjukan is in a deep valley and spends half of the year in shade. The cable car was built in the 1920s and enabled the inhabitants of Rjukan to get up into the mountains and particularly in Winter into the light (literally). It is still in use today.

IMG_20170606_111840.jpg

Weirdly enough, in modern times Rjukan have invested in 3 large solar powered mirrors on the mountainside. This means that in winter the central square of Rjukan is now lit with natural light.

We wanted to go and have a look via the cable car but unfortunately bad light and low cloud meant we had to give it a miss.

However, for those interested Googling Rjukan sun will give you further information.:).

Depending on which day you went around the roundabout we were on it yesterday morning and having passed through Odda on our way to Eidford, so our paths have crossed...

Having walked up to Pulpits Rock on Monday morning the forecast for southern Norway was poor for the next 5 days so we headed north and are now perhaps 200 kms north of Trondheim and the weather is very warm (24C ) considering we are so near the Arctic Circle..

Fuel varies by perhaps 40% in the same street!!! We've paid as little as €1.125 a litre to today at Trondheim €1.32 a litre.. in the sticks you could pay €1.60 a litre..

Will post a few photos later..

We have been hanging around the Telemarken canal for the past few days.

We stopped for a couple of nights at Dalen which is where the canal starts. Nothing in camper contact but a sign in the village took us to a motorhome parking spot by a small marina.
IMG_20170606_164446.jpg

The only boats on the canal at the moment are the canal trip boat which we see passing through the locks. It also parks up near us in the marina, all lit up late at night.
IMG_20170607_230516.jpg

There are well marked cycle routes along the Telemarken canal between the locks. These often take you up over a hill and down into another valley, a reminder that the canal originally was set up to make trading easier in this area. They also like to take us and our bikes over narrow lock gate crossings.

IMG_20170610_121812.jpg

Our second stop along the route is just outside Lunde by the lock at Hogga (camperstop 19969).
IMG_20170608_172140.jpg

We are right next to a lock (our van is just below the lock gates) with a great view of the canal trip boats as they go past.

IMG_20170609_134426.jpg

Heading towards the coast next, our ferry to Denmark is later this week.

I see you had the same low cloud at Dalen that we had last weekend...

Now well into the Arctic Circle on the Lofoten Islands..
Norway 2017 007.JPG

Our view for tonight to watch the sun nearly go down.. Since we left the south last Monday we've had almost unbroken sunshine, DAY and NIGHT...temperature in the 20s.. Not bad for the Arctic Circle..

To be fair northern Norway knocks Southern Norway for six when the sun shines as it has this week...

Roads are perfect, ferries punctual, fuel and supermarkets everywhere... Northern Norway is well populated..

Will start a thread of our northern Norway travels later..

Western Isles are dwarfed just by the Lofoten Isles which are dwarfed themselves by the route to get here...

Below is where we stayed last night before we caught the ferry as a taster. The flat bit is a frozen lake..

It didn't dark at all, and the sun reflected off the snow all night!!!

Yes, it is technical kit, men love that.

I have one ball of wool and a pair of knitting needles with me on this trip .No fabric or crafting fripperies as all spare space was taken up with food/drink to avoid high Norwegian prices.

I have been knitting , I don't think I could afford to buy a jumper in Norway. Having a cup of coffee at a cafe is expensive enough :)
