NON-Toxic Mosquito Repellent
I have not tried this, but am assured it works and is worth passing on. For those that are against chemicals it is completely non toxic. Am not sure if it works on midges, but cannot see why not. All the oils can be had from your local health shop.

6 drops Lavender essential oil
5 drops Lemongrass essential oil
3 Tablespoon Vodka
5 drops Lemon essential oil
Add all ingredients to a spray bottle. Fill with water. Shake and spray to your heart's delight! You can use this on yourself, your pets, your family..even your little ones! (Spray in to your hands first and then apply to kids by rubbing it on them!)

As someone who's regularly 'eaten alive' this sounds interesting... but, lets face it, even if it didn't keep the mozzies away you'd smell nice!

We use equal amounts of Dettol and Johnsons baby oil. Stays on all night. There is a smell of the Dettol initially but after a short time it goes away but not for the insects.

One year. A whole one!
Also handy as a breath-freshener by the sound of it.

And a cocktail.

Or maybe a marinade for chicken.

Aah, no. Not quite. I was referring to Dave's recipe.

But I do know someone who did gargle with wee once. He was the subject of a Simon Mayo 'Confessions' story many years ago.

Any idea how much water to dilute this with ?

Just top up the spray bottle with water. The spray bottles hold about a litre I think and are available from the pound shops. As there are no chemicals in the ingredients then the water content is not important, its only a dilutant.

Err, I thought Lemon oil was corrosive? Remember my ma telling me it was what they used to clean straw boaters with, and you had to get it from the chemists and they had to believe what you said you needed it for, cos it was on the 'poisons' list.

I would have thought that 3 drops in a litre of water would hardly be classed as toxic, but I could be wrong as I am often told.

Get a sprig or two of Bog Myrtle rub in your hands and wipe the juice over exposed areas, not unpleasent smell and perfectly safe.

On and off for many years.
I make something similar without the vodka (but might try that but think any alcohol would do - even rubbing alcohol!) but with citronella oil. I used to make soap as a hobby and bought essential oils in much bigger bottles than available in the health food shops - a lot cheaper / stronger concentrate as well. Don't use essential oils neat - some are corrosive unless diluted and some stain.
