Have these through my house and for the external lights.
Easy to work off the phone or I pad.

We have 'automation' already ... it's called timers on the table lamps! :)

We had the house rewired and included some Marmitek X-10 automation BUT this standard is no longer supported as the manufacturer has gone out of business so try not to build in obsolescence.

It was brilliant on a simple level. Very cheap. All one needed for lighting, aquatics and did not clutter the airwaves but as you say, obsolete.

Now the tech gobbles up airwaves, is far from cheap and too complicated. Like new MHs once it goes wrong very tricky to diagnose.

I took one of my modules apart and the little bit of plastic that throws the switch via the solenoid had broken and I couldn't see a way of fixing it, or getting all the bits back in the case:LOL:

I have Hive - originally bought as an "intelligent" heating system (there's a thread somewhere debating which is the best Hive or Nest)...

...but they've added plugs, lights, sensors & cameras to their product list.

I've got a couple of their light bulbs - which are really "cool"... one even changes colour!
The main advantage over 'simple' cheap plugin timers is that you can vary the schedule remotely whilst away from the house.
Hive Active Light Starter Kit
...and of course, the bulbs can be used in any light, even ceiling ones [I have one on the landing light to simulate nightime bathroom trips  ]

Another 'fun' gizmo I've got is one of these TV Emulators - makes it look as if the TV is on - surprisingly effective, especially in an upstairs room.

Rather than switch deterrents on and off randomly, don't you want them to only function when someone is around top 'benefit'?
