What’s the position re overnighting on the Island? I believe you cannot on the large car park( there was at least 1 van parked in a far corner who was obviously overnighting) but can you park up where it is safe from the tide near the dunes Before the causeway? There are hand written signs saying no camping but they are obviously not legal.

You are not supposed to overnight (not sure if this is legal or the residents objecting) but there is often a van or two in the large car park plus I have seen vans parked in the winery but not sure if they were there overnight.

The dunes are fragile and I would discourage parking anywhere near them.

There’s a very pleasant site at Beal Barns on the road to Holy Island.
I appreciate its not on the island but it does have views of the island.
I would love to stay overnight there but I wouldn’t want to upset the locals.
We had a cottage there for a week, many years ago, and in the evenings when the day trippers had left it was really magical.
Loved it ever since.

Richard.

I guess if you were already on the island when the tide came in late evening you'd have little choice but to stay on the car park overnight?:giggle::sneaky:

There is no overnight parking allowed on the island although I have on occasion seen the odd van overnighting in the Snook car park but as a regular visitor I would not contemplate it. I go off season and stay at the Haven Haggerston Castle Site a short drive to the North of Beal out of season they do some great deals. If you eat at Eat Sleep Lindisfarne at Beal they allow overnighting in their car park with use of toilets and showers when open

The Northumberland Council web page <Broken link removed> lists the car parks where motorhome parking - not camping is allowed.
Note the statement "Please note: cooking, camping and sleeping are not allowed in any of our car parks."

Obviously not legal? Doesn't that depend on whose land it is? :)
If they are on privately owned (non car park) land there is no right of access anyway.
If they are on council car parks the parking TRO is in effect.

Also, the island car park is only for under 3500kg vans.

Not that I’ve noticed anyone with scales when we’ve parked there.
Stupid, petty regulations. :swear2:

There is nothing stupid or petty about the regulations. Car parks are built to a standard to accommodate the vehicles that they are there to serve. In most cases those are cars as defined by the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.
If we choose to purchase heavier vehicles we choose to accept any resultant inconvenience in parking them, just as we do for all large vehicles we buy.

"A 9000 signature petition from the residents", there's only 180 people living permanently on the island, good old Daily Mail !
Get yourself a horned Viking helmet and leave it on your dash, that'll keep the locals at bay !

Why not stay at Berwick Sea View - lovely site, near the walled city and you can cycle to Holy Island without upsetting the environment or the local community.

That refers to the old central car park which is now coaches and disabled parking only. What we call the new car park is huge and can accommodate large vans

I know, I think that every time I race by a primary school at 90 mph.
I was thinking more about the 'no overnight parking or sleeping in vehicles' etc. as well as the 'no over 3.5t' rule.

Contact Northumberland County Council using the form Here to explain all the advantages to the council of allowing overnight camping and how it would not be detrimental at all to the current users of the car park.

I am all for wild camping but not on Holy Island, there are too many people flouting the current no overnighting in the car park which is a shame.
It would become a bigger problem if it was actually allowed. It’s just too popular a place, if there was actually a campsite on the island it would make a fortune.

The farmland is actually rented from a Scottish estate, visiting and birding a lot I asked the question to the farmer several years ago who would be up for a CL type set up but it’s not allowed as part of the rental agreement.

Like the man said, it depends on the tides. I, for one, wouldn't play chicken on the causeway.

And despite some people's opinions the safe crossing times apply to everyone and don't exclude tourists, walkers. cyclists (I could go on).
