Hi all. Pleased to join via subscription now after being a free member for a year. My husband and I came over to Extramadura where we have a finca last August 2020. Due to lock downs etc and travel restrictions we have stayed ever since doing up the property etc and enjoying the seclusion! We have a Carthago Malibu 2015 LHD which we niw need to get onto Spanish plates as we have now successfully applied for residencia here in Spain. We've discovered its a bit of a process and need to get some assistance as the latest requirement is for us to provide a Certificate of Conformity from Peugeot Spain to confirm VIN and Chassis no. Etc. Any assistance from a Funster in a similar situation would be very welcome and timely!! Also info about any import tax liability altho we think there may be a grace period from the date of Spanish residencia having been granted.

Hi and welcome.

if you can prove the motorhome was in the Spain before 1st Jan 2021 (ITV as an example). You may be able to avoid import tax.

There may be other ways of avoiding import tax if you are going to be applying for residency in Spain.

It may be easier to get an agent to carry out the import for you.

I could import my car as I had a COC (Alicante). But, for €100 more, My agent could have taken it to Murcia. They will do it without COC.

How far away from Murcia are you ?. I know a good agent if you are interested?. Send me a PM.

Shouldn't cost anywhere near that as you are not at present a resident. Therefore you do not pay any import tax as as long as you start any process before you register on the padron or withing 30 days of registering the it is classed as " goods & chattels"
We used to do loads.
as follows.
1)Take vehicle to ITV station .
poke registration document & mot under counter & state change of matriculation.
pay arround 220€ for test & vehicle check. assuming all in order they test vehicle same as an itv but with a bit more checking.tyres, type all vin numbers etc& ensure that the model complies with what is on the spanish system.

2)You then receive a 'ficha tecnica' which is the complete vehicle documented technically but it has as yet , no registration number on it. Also the ITV.

3)then go to your local town hall & pay road tax based on name ,address & VIN number. This amount varies from council to council even within a region. Here my transit is 140€

4)Then to trafico for you probably in Alicante.
Pay for form & fill in for registration then take ticket & wait to be called.
Hand over all paper work . Assuming all correct then you will receive the ficha tecnica back complete with a registration number & a 'permiso' ,which is the registration document allowing you to be on the road as long as a current itv is in force.

5)Then go & get number plates=15€
Any other amount would be what the gestoria uis charging .
The only difference to the above is if you are already registered on the padron & replating as then after 4) obtaing & completing the form you have to go to the Hacienda (tax office) take a ticket ,wait , then pay 4.1% of the government yearly value for the vehicle . that is payable in the bank inside the Hacienda .Once done you then queue again to get the payment form stamped . then back to trafico & on to 4)

people use gestorias as the vehicle tax is now able to be paid online in there office ,if there is any, along with the road tax. They can then just attend trafico once with a pile replating papers normally charging around 40-50€ for this service.
We've never changed any headlights even on rhd vehicles. just had beam patterns altered.
Only other things I can recall doing was on one Nissan it had to have a rear fog light fitted on offside & Ifor williams trailers have to have the chassis numbers stamped on the left hand A frame rail-

Moving for less than 6 months
If you move to another EU country and you are going to stay for less than 6 months, you don't have to register your car or pay any registration taxes there. You can keep your car registered in your country of residence. You may, however, need to pay road taxes. Road taxes are due for the use of your car, in your new country. It is a good idea to always have your car registration certificate, certificate of ownership and a proof of your permanent residency with you when driving in case you are stopped by the police and need to prove where you are subject to taxation.

If you haven't registered your car in your new country, you may not lend or rent it to a resident of that country if you aren't in the car with him/her. You may, however, lend your car to visiting friends or family members as long as they do not have their permanent residence in the new country.

Car registration in another EU country

How long can you stay in an EU country before you have to register your car there? Where should your car be registered if your stay is only temporary? Can you be exempt from registering your car? Are there penalties if you don't register your car?

& this is how ridiculous EU directives are as no one ever envisaged any actually having to work in conjunction with others or the sheer amount of people who would move to other states.
The above is perfectly true.EXCEPT after 90 days the individual in most EU states is either required to become resident or ,if no need to register, then they are deemed automatically to be resident. Then you have the problem that they can now not drive the vehicle as a 'resident' cannot drive a foreign plated vehicle.
It used to be quite common here next door in Almeria in spring summer with trafico stopping foreigners who had been here some months. any found to be over 90 days got replate papers even if they were not actually registered as resident. Nightmare to sort out.

As far as I am aware a resident of an EU country with a driving licence issued in that country can not drive a foreign registered vehicle regardless of who is in the vehicle.
They changed it a few years back.Might even have been after the referendum. It was definitely still the law in 2013/14 as I specifically asked the question of both the DVLA & Used the EU solvit process to get a definitive reply.
Trouble is most police have no idea that if the owner is in the vehicle it becomes legal & you've as much chance of explaining it even with the paperwork in their language.

Hope this covers what you require.

Regards

Hi Euro trotters. Thanks for your response. We live in Extramadura and collected our Trajetas de residencia (biometric cards) last week so we have 5 years here now thereby avoiding the 90 day rule post Brexit. We would appreciate a contact of someone who is a specialist as the local gestor has very rarely HD this request and is a bit unclear about the process. We took it for an ITV with the log book but were told we needed a C of C and u was a bit alarmed that Peugeot Spain might charge over 640 euros for this. We also want to avoid import tax and CAN prove we brought the van in on 25th August 2020 (via Dover/Calais). We were totally within the Foreign Office guidance at the time but that changed later in August. We had only intended to be away for 3 months and now we have been here for 7 months but fortunately have been Ble to apply for and now receive, residency. So the next process is matriculation of the campervan. Hope that makes sense? Best wishes from Elspanne

Hi and :welcome3: !!

Sounds as though you've got a great set-up in Extramadura! Sensible decision to stay there and concentrate on doing up your property. And good that you've secured resident status.

Glad to see there is already some valuable info coming up in the thread in response to your question about importing and registering your MH in Spain. Doubtless there will be more advice forthcoming.

Enjoy the FUN! (y)

Thanks so much for your response. We are having an adventure in our 60s!! It's quite funny because when we left Dover on 25/8/20 the Border force official said jokingly' you two look like you are up to mischief! 'and that's exactly what we are up to in our dotage!

Hi , we used a gestor it wasn't that expensive, we decided to sell our old RHD and buy in Germany, the gestor sorted it all, sent her photos from Germany and the paperwork, she said if you get them to do this and that it saved us 😲 €800, so well worth getting her to do it. 😁
You fetch your vehicle in as personal belongings, so it's worth paying someone that deals with these things, it makes life easier, there are things we do ourselves but important things that save you money you want it right. 😁 Bob.
