Still not resolved as Hobby UK have told us as our window is broken they do not have to pay for it because it is out of warranty but have offered us a 30% discount! As yet they haven't actually told me how much.
The cheeky b@$t@rd$!! The only reason your window is broken is because they didn't install it properly in the first place! Outrageous!

I see that pyro has kindly provided a wealth of information on the legal side of things. There is no reason for you to have to pay a penny. (y)

I'll keep an eye on this thread, and if it comes to it, will help draft any legal claims that may be needed. Personally, I think Hobby will do the right thing, though

@pyro You are a star, thank-you, that is better advice than I got off CAB today who suggested The Sale of Goods Act and didn't seem to take into account the recall notice.

I have already today e-mailed CEO in Germany as Hobby UK are being very reluctant to communicate and seem not sure how to progress with my repair although I have found out the window they ordered for us is now at their depot.

Trading Standards tomorrow morning ...... wish us luck.

We should be in France!!!

As Hobby have admitted a faulty design/workmanship (keep those recall letters!) then they are going to have a very hard job denying liability for the cost of the window that flew off. They should count their blessings that a cyclist wasn't decapitated in the process.

Check your home insurance policy for legal cover/consumer disputes. If your insurance doesn't cover holiday cancellation, then you may have a claim in the small claims/fast track court

To check if your vehicle is affected you can go to http://www.telerep.de/hobby and put your Vehicle Identification Number in the box, if you then see this page

Sehr geehrter Fahrzeughalter,

Just awaiting translation from bi-lingual niece as my school girl german from 45+ years ago manages so much.

I have had the cyclist/head on as car behind swerves sleepless night/nightmare waking in cold sweat. Even at one point was rushing from the vehicle to do emergency firstaid as my grandson was shouting 'that was a big bang'

Have not as yet received a letter to keep, but have taken 'snapshot' of confirmation my vehicle is subject to the recall off the recall page on Hobby.de website.

Mention the mental distress and anxiety in your communications with Hobby/TSO. In the unlikely event that it ends up in court, you are allowed up to £1,000 for damages claims

If anyone has a copy of the recall letter, it might be an idea to scan (with personal details obscured) and upload. All evidence must be retained. Do bear in mind that you could probably get National Windscreens or someone to examine where the window was and to write a report stating that in their opinion, the loss of the glass and the subsequent damage is entirely consistent with the Urgent Safety Recall Notice

My e-mail to German HQ (sent yesterday) has had the desired effect and we are now getting it done at no charge.

Thank-you for all your help and support. Special thanks to @pyro knowing I was better equipped to present my case, I actually slept better last night. If you ever see us parked up somewhere, Hobby van, mountain rescue sticker in window and large red labrador/vizsla cross dog we owe you a drink at least.

In all fairness to Hobby UK I think they were just passing on what Germany were saying and it was down to a different interpretation of how the law is applied.

I do believe we may not be on the HOBBY.de 50th Birthday Party invitation list next year.:D

Fantastic news!

I'm really pleased for you that this has been sorted out, and hope that Hobby will be as reasonable to others.

It should not have been such a drama for you, it was their mistake, and fair play, they admitted it

I look forward to sharing a glass with you any time (y)

My van has now been sorted by two excellent fitters from National windscreens, Chris and John. They removed the window and re-fitted it and said that the glue was degrading so it was only a matter of time before it came out. They said it was not just Hobby that had this problem but they had seen it in similar windows fitted on other manufacturers vans and was due to the wrong adhesive being used.
Thank you to Maz and Liz from Hobby and all those that have helped resolve this problem.

National windows are sending up 2 men to do the window! We are on the list apparently and are doing another up north! Have yet to confirm the date!
Very happy and grateful to @pyro or all his help and @colyboy for the original heads up and all the Funsters who posted their own stories!
Glad Hobby have followed through.
We do love our Hobby van and look forward to safe trips away this winter.

It's done, and we are off to France tomorrow, only 3.5 weeks not 5 but at least it's done and huge thanks to folks here for support, to Hobby UK for pulling out all the stops to get the window from Germany and here in time and the ultimate stars National Windscreen's fitters who drove up from Swansea this afternoon and have only just left to go home. :)

Too Late!!! reading this forum. Having received the recall letter I asked my usual service agent who is registered NCC to do the repair for me. Five weeks after ordering the repair kit they attempted the repair yesterday. This morning they ring me to say they had cracked the screen trying to remove it and a new replacement was at best £900 plus VAT plus fitting. In hindsight should have researched this site beforehand. Any useful observations or guidance.

@Stubas Sorry to hear that , we had ours done by National Windscreens via Hobby Uk.
Surely if the company cracked the window by trying to refit it it's their responsibility and therefore their cost and not yours ?

Hi @Stubas Sorry to hear of your problems. The work of implementing the urgent recall from Hobby is covered by the Consumer Rights Act 2015, which specifies that the trader must perform the service with reasonable care and skill.

Given the admission that they have caused damage to the window, then they are under an obligation to rectify the damage. You should not be paying for their incompetence.

You might find these links helpful http://www.which.co.uk/consumer-rights/regulation/consumer-rights-act See "Supply of A Service" Alternatively https://www.gov.uk/consumer-protection-rights

I suggest you speak with Hobby first, they may offer to instruct National Windscreens to sort out the problem, and sort things out themselves with the trader. Alternatively, and if the trader is not being cooperative, speak to Citizen's Advice, that should provoke a response

My availability to help is a bit mixed at the moment as I am on the road, but I was pinged following your PM and will try to check in more often

I think this thread should be regularly bumped to the top as I suspect there are many more Hobby owners either unaware of the recall or unaware of how it is being dealt with.

Thanks for the replies so far and I am in touch with Hobby UK. However this is not a problem with my service agent as I will explain when I have heard from Hobby UK.
I do not understand how National Windscreens have got involved with this problem as I have had no advice to consult them from Hobby UK.

We managed to contact the original owner ( who was away at the time so we didn't get a reply until after ours was adjusted ) he hadn't received one and was the new owner originally.
Actually it was lovely to chat to him and he was glad we loved the van.

Because Hobby have so few dealers in the U.K. (10 in total), they supposedly arranged for NCC members to do the recall work as well. However, in practice most NCC members either couldn't or didn't want to do the work. Therefore Hobby arranged for National Windscreens to do the work instead - which has turned out to be the best option as they really know what they are doing.

It looks as though we jumped the gun as Hobby UK advised us to contact a local NCC dealer, no mention of National Windscreens.

Having spoken to National Windscreens locally I find they have done about 8 to 10 of these jobs without a single breakage, however they could not answer the question where they would find a replacement if they did break one. My motorhome is sitting in the repairers workshop with a hole in the roof and I am told the lead time is 3 to 5 weeks for a replacement. Pity anyone who gets a broken one on the driveway.

Seems like a distant nightmare for us now as we are sitting in the sunshine in Cevennes area of France. Sorry to hear of your problems Stubas, be persistant.

Anthea the recall letters are sent via Hobby Germany using info from DVLA with VIN numbers so they go to who ever the vehicle is currently registered with so I can't understand why the letters aren't reaching everyone (who has taxed their vehicle!) although I do believe there was a hick-up with the addresses early on by Hobby Germany.

One question, of course, is when did Hobby obtain the data from DVLA? My (used) motorhome was imported earlier this year and registered with DVLA in May and no recall letter received. However, having learnt of the recall I got in touch with Hobby UK and the job has now been done - by National Windscreens. Not, in my view, the sort of job that should be done by a non-specialist company.
