Get it checked asap!

We have not had a letter and had not heard about the recall.....today travelling at less than 40mph ours flew off, missed the car behind and landed in the verge....embedding itself 4'' into the ground. We were very shaken by the very loud bang and the potential implications. Our 2.5 year old grandson spent the next 20 miles repeating 'That was a loud bang' and complaining about having to have his waterproof on! We drove to a Hobby dealer who said nothing about a recall and told us it could take 3 to 4 weeks to get one. Came home and trawled internet and got referred to this forum so thank-you all, have now joined so I could post my thanks. Have contacted Hobby UK but still waiting for a call back.
Welcome to the Fun from another Hobby owner. What a horrible experience for you!

We haven't had any luck in finding anyone under the alleged agreement between Hobby and NCC Approved Workshops, so after reading your story we'll be contacting Hobby again on Monday. Seems like National Windscreens is the way to go.

National Windscreens came today.
2 guys in two vans. They were from the specialist glazing team.
This is the first one they had done. They're paperwork was very sketchy as to the requirements.
They sheeted the front of the van and set up a scaffold tower to access the roof light.
Took them about twenty minutes to decide how to remove the screen.
They set to work with their specialist tools and removed the roof light.
They found out that on one side the original glue sealant had not bonded properly.
They cleaned everything up and primed the surface.
On refitting they did away with the old rubber trim that left a small annulus around the roof light and fully sealed all the edges.
The finished job is superb.
These guys are real pros. And their attention to detail was very impressive.
I would have no hesitation in recommending them.

Brilliant and thanks very much for that info. (y)

Done a good job don't want rain getting in!i hope the window comes in time for the ferry ! Perhaps go to Germany and pick one up and get them to do it!

The thought had crossed my mind especially as I have a bi-lingual niece living and working in Hambourg who can come and be very forceful and I don't think they would be too impressed with us parked outside with our big hole!

The guy I spoke to said they had now done a couple of Hobby roof lights. Will let you all know the outcome.

Just got off the phone from my local Hobby dealership and even though our van is a 2015 reg its a "van" - just thought i would ask if they were aware of this : The reply was "Yes we are aware of it but its best to check it yourself first for any movement or cracks in the glass as the customer has to pay the first £1000 towards it" WHAT ? "Yes came the reply, thats why we are telling people to check it themselves first... This is just one of the many reasons why i choose to do work myself, I have had work carried out by this company under warranty and they charged it to the dealership who we purchased the van from, they did a line of silicon in the bathroom about 14" long and charged them £90 + VAT, not only that i had to go over it myself afterwards cos they had missed a piece about 5" long..... Why would they say that the customer has to pay a £1000 towards it ? this is the first i have ever heard of this !

Sounds as though they don't want to do the work. Probably because they consider the rate that Hobby would pay them for the job is too low. I had this sort of issue with them in the past.

I phoned Hobby UK on 01773 853900. A lady called Liz usually answers the phone and it was she who contacted National Windscreens for me.

I have rung Hobby UK and told them how pleased I was with the repair. Hopefully if work of a similar standard is carried out to other vans by National Windscreens everyone can get the problems sorted quickly without having to travel to dealers.

A two-man team from National Windscreens specialist glazing unit, Rob and Keith, came this afternoon for the recall work. Our roof light was loose along the back edge and the adhesive primer had degraded so that in places it just peeled away. They reckoned that after a year or so it would have fallen out.

They removed the roof light, cleaned all around the edges, then replaced the roof light using a thicker adhesive primer that does not degrade in sunlight. Very neat job and very relieved that it has been done. Thank you National Windscreens! (y)

Back in the day, I often had to call on windscreen services up and down the country.
National Windscreens ended up right on the top of the list.. They were ALWAYS spot on for appointments, work ethic, ability and customer care in general.
No idea how such a big firm has managed to get a work force that is so consistently great, but I have yet to come across any one from the company who has not been the consummate professional ..

Update from us Rob phoned Hobby Uk and they advised us to go to our local dealer when we explained we had but didn't seem to want the work and told us they were a small firm and busy.
With that the lady on the phone said she would contact national windscreens and get back to us!!(y)
Rob did mention we had feedback from a forum about others having a great job done , I think the mention of the forum word worked!! ( we didn't say which one!):)
Thanks for all the help and advice everyone.

Just had a thought. We had a letter arrive from Hobby Germany with the wrong name address (post code was the only thing correct) via recorded delivery. Our postman who knows us very well did not deliver it as the name and address was wrong, although he knew we were Hobby owners. He told us what had happened the next day. Miraculously, two days later another recorded letter arrived with the name and address correct .

I wonder if Hobby Germany sent other recorded delivery letters without correct addresses? This may be the reason that some Hobby owners did not receive their letters.

May well have done. We bought ours from a dealer so the original owner could have received one.

Still not resolved as Hobby UK have told us as our window is broken they do not have to pay for it because it is out of warranty but have offered us a 30% discount! As yet they haven't actually told me how much.

Letters were sent out by Hobby Germany after getting details of ownership from DVLA with VIN numbers Hobby supplied them with.

The Vehicle Standards Agency are in contact with Hobby Germany over the issue in general.

So if you have had a letter get it checked asap. If you have not but have one of the models please get it checked. It'll save you a lot of stress.

Still waiting on the call back from Hobby Uk! Will ring tomorrow.
Surely even if the warranty has run out the fact the window was badly fitted initially would mean it was there issue?!

@pyro what do you advise please. PM me if you think it's advisable . Thankyou.

In the interests of trying to help as many people as possible in one post, I have skim read the thread.

Ordinarily the customer becomes liable for the remedial costs if a fault is identified after the initial warranty period. This does not apply as in this case where an official vehicle safety recall is declared, where a strict code of practice is in place. https://www.gov.uk/government/publi...e-safety-defects-and-recalls-code-of-practice

This is amply covered in legislation: The General Product Safety Regulations 2005 is a Statutory Instrument of the Parliament that demands that "No producer shall [supply or] place a [consumer] product on the market unless the product is a safe product" (reg.5(1)) and provides broad enforcement powers." See http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2005/1803/regulation/9/made.

See also: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/code-of-practice-on-vehicle-safety-defects-and-recalls. Note this specifically applies to motorhomes.

This appears to be an urgent safety recall resulting from defective design/engineering prior to the sale of the vehicles, responsibility clearly lies with the manufacturer. Here are a couple of links that may be helpful: http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/general-advice/post-warranty-faults.html (see bottom of the page headed "recalls") and this one http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/general-advice/post-warranty-faults.html

As I say, this was a skim read. The first thing to do is contact the manufacturer/importer and ask them what they plan to do. If they choose to use National Windscreens to check your vehicle, then it seems they take their work seriously. If the manufacturer is obstructive, then your next stop should be your local Trading Standards Officer (c/o your local town hall), who will take it up officially.

It is also worth checking your home insurance policy. Many policies have a consumer legal protection element, in which case they will arrange a solicitor for you in the unlikely event that Hobby are being troublesome. Bearing in mind that Hobby could be held liable for the cost of a cancelled holiday, and that they seem to be taking a perfectly responsible attitude, I think this will be enough to force action.

Also do remember that if you are a member of a motoring organisation that does more than just recover vehicles (the AA or the RAC) then they have legal advisors who specialise in this area

Under no circumstances part with any money to a dealer, it is absurd that anyone tried it on by demanding payment for work that National Windscreens are probably doing for considerably lower cost. Such dealers really do deserve to be named and shamed.

If push comes to shove, most insurers will probably be sympathetic under their glass replacement cover. Alternatively, taking the dealer to the small claims court to recover the cost of having any work done privately should be a doddle on the basis of the urgent recall notice (https://www.moneyclaim.gov.uk/web/mcol/welcome)

The legislation quoted above applies to second hand and personal imports
