Hi,

We live in Australia but want to hire a motor home in southern Germany or around that general area,
to spend ten weeks or so, traveling around Southern Germany, Northern Italy, France. We want to go next northern summer, as I have my 70th birthday, end of September and want to spend it in Northern
Ireland, the country of my birth and first 20 years of my life. Will fly there from Europe and will probably
look at starting our trip, around middle of July.

Have considered buying and selling when we leave but apart from the capital outlay, the worry of selling or leaving on consignment, and trying to negotiate from Australia, might be too much worry and hassle

Would appreciate any advice or tips on hiring etc. Have owned a motor home and traveled around, in Australia for nearly ten years (180,000kms) mostly 'freedom camping'. In Australia all the hire vans come with bed linen, towels and cooking utensils, etc. but from preliminary viewing of hire arrangements, seems to be different, although I may have misread.

We prefer to stay out of caravan parks, mainly because of the expense and the type of people who we meet and have met, in free camp sites. Have ordered a couple of books from Vicarious books, to get an idea of camp sites, etc.

Hope to hear from fellow travelers, so we can get arrangements made by new year.

Regards,

Lewis and Wendy

Not sure about the hiring abroad (Europe) but they stitch you up from here (UK) with extra costs for mileage and taking it to Europe.

A personal view is if its going to cots about £1k a week for 10 weeks, (My maths make that £10k) then buying a pretty reasonable motor at about £30k and leaving it to a trusted friend relative to sell when you fly back has got to be more financially viable.

It has been known to private buy, tour Europe, sell privately and make a profit. But then again I am a tight fisted so and so. Good luck

@Lewis and Wendy I have a good friend who runs a Facebook group where he specialises in helping people from OZ and NZ do exactly what you want to do...

There always appears to be many ex hire Hymers for sale in Germany, in good condition, so somebody must hire them out. In general terms MHs seem to be cheaper in Germany than the UK so hire rates may be as well. If you ask there should be plenty of recommendations on this forum to helpful English speaking German dealers.
