Hi what is a suitable small car to tow on back of motorhome please..

No auto gearbox, watch the weight to keep within your max train mass and don’t go to mainland Europe.

Plan B. Push bikes or electric assist bike.
Plan C, Bus Pass
Plan D , Walk

We use plans C&D. With the odd Taxi thrown in.

We have towed a toad for 10 years now in the UK a Smart a Toyota IQ and now an Up, the smart was the least desirable.
All did the job and served the purpose.

We have been a-framing for many years, previously a Ford Ka and a Toyota Aygo and currently a Peugeot 108. All these were easy to tow without any problem.

I tow a VW Up with no problems. Previously towed a Smart but it didn’t always behave and you have to be very careful not to leave it in the false neutral when towing.

Whatever car you choose it must be within the limits on the vans VIN plate for MAXIMUM TRAIN WEIGHT.
That's the max combined weight of the van and car and the figures to use must be the GROSS WEIGHT of both vehicles even though the car will probably be towed empty.

Another vote for the Volkswagen UP. Brilliant car just drove ours to Glasgow and back (520 miles) 1000cc 60bhp engine but floats along easily at err... High speed ? put it this way, it's made to go OK on the autobahn. 50 odd mpg too ?

We have Picanto X line
Anything MANUAL in the City Car class would do , but Smarts are a bit “quirky” so I would avoid if you dont have one already

Hyundai i10/ Picanto = same car
Aygo/Citroen C1/ peugeot 107 = same car
VW Up/ Skoda Citigo/ Mitsubishi Mii = same car

Watch out for the weight of the a frame itself, some are quite heavy

You need a trailer licence ( grandfather or other)

[ and they are not currently illegal to use in Europe BTW, as a UK resident driving a UK registered vehicle]
