Used to own a caravan and decided to buy a motorhome. We've had it 3 years. Unfortunately I bought a dud with a faulty gearbox unbeknown to me at the time. We have used it quite a lot and had some good holidays away in it but last summer when everyone else was enjoying the hot summer we had, I spent a good part of it removing and then putting back the gearbox on my own which on a Fiat Ducato Sundance is no easy task.

I'm hoping to find someone on here who can point me in the direction of an expert in gear boxes whose brain I can pick for advice.

Gearbox diagnosis and repair has always been a hands and eyes on affair
Anything else come under the heading guesswork and supposition
leading to unnecessary time and cost

Ducato G/boxes leak through the linkage, Rain water leaks onto the g/b from the skuttle

    Was the oil emulsified?

There is an official Modification, go to your Peugeot dealer.

Water stuffs the Sincros, 4th &5th Gears, and on the pre 02 versions ,stuffs the speedo drive (inside the g/b, it's mane of blue plastic)

One of the common faults on the Ducatos

Hi, I'm still finding my way around the forum so wasn't that sure how to reply, hence quoting everything you wrote.

We found out about all these problems last year when I started looking into finding a replacement gear box. A replacement would appear to be near on impossible to find. I got a 2nd gear syncro, stripped the gear box out of the van and took it to a gearbox "specialist" for them to strip down the gear box and fit the ring. Got it back and put the gear box back and filled with new oil. Now it's first gear that I struggle with. It won't go into first gear if its moving. I have to stop completely to get it into first gear. Which is a pain in slow moving traffic.

I need to get the first gear syncro changed. I can't face stripping that gear box out again plus I don't trust anyone to replace it anyway. So I'm stuck really with a piece of old junk that I wish I'd never set eyes on. I spent £500 last year and I'm no better off. I can't even get rid because no one would take it in part ex and unlike the character that sold it to me I couldn't sell it privately and lie to a potential buyer that there was nothing wrong with it. The speedo drive is fine. I looked at that. Basically I need to find someone who I can trust to do the job properly but is there such a firm?

Hi Figaro I didn't see this reply box at the bottom. No as you can see from a previous reply its not sorted. It does drive but it needs sorting really as I'm stuck with it and wouldn't mind getting something a bit smaller. Thanks for the welcome message (y)

Not sure where you are but A1 Gearboxes in St. Neots are in my experience very competent, they will also overhaul gearboxes presented to them for repair. The guy who does the manuals there is super keen and very knowledgeable, give them a call and see what they think.

Thank you GPW. I'm near Manchester but if I thought someone could sort it out once and for all it would be worth the trip. I'll certainly look them up and give them a call. Thanks. I've found their website.

I`m not sure you should be trying to put it in first gear whilst still moving.
If your moving slip, it into second and it should pull away fine.
By the way, if you px`ed it, I`d be suprised if the dealer took a test drive.
