Under 3500kg £270
Over 3500kg £165
That’s what I thought, but I couldn’t understand why a camper under 3500kg should cost more to tax than a one over that weight. Is there some bizarre logic here that I’m missing or is it just some weird UK anomaly ??

Over 3500 VED is the same as a goods vehicle it has been £165 for about 15 years its not subject to annual increases.
I don't know why but I'm not complaining about it.

Is it the former that the DVLA use to decide the duty ? What’s the second one - fully laden weight or ???

3300kg is the MAM (Gross weight) this is the one for VED
5800kg is the Gross train weight - vehicle gross + trailer.
1750kg max front axle
1900kg max rear axle

With a gross of 3300kg you may be very tight on payload should be uprate to 3500 or 3650kg without any mods. For 3650 you will need a C1 licence.

Thanks again Lenny. This is our first camper so err, when you say “uprate” are you talking about beefing up the van in someway or ??

I said without any mods, your total axle weight is 3650 so you could go up to that.
Best to weight the axles on a weighbridge when you are fully loaded for a trip. No point in uprating of the axles are on the limit. Even then the rear axle can normally be uprated.
