Our son & daughter (and partners) have both moved away from home, to Exeter, and buying a MH seems to be the best way to keep in touch without living with them.
Also thinking of using it for holidays, in uk and eu, in our retirement.

Sounds like a plan. Have you given any thought to what sort of van you might get?

Certainly plenty of advice available on here.

Getting better
Hi Robert
Welcome to the Fun.
Buying a motorhome I'm sure will be the best investment you will make.
Able to visit kids and leave whenever you've had enough, just in time to holiday at home or away.
Advise just do it if you can.

I've noticed that even 20 yr old vans haven't got loads of miles on them... <100k
I also understand that one of the important things to look for is damp/water ingress.

If you have a spare day over the weekend why don't you and your other half take a drive over to the Three Counties Showground at Malvern as there is a big motorhome event there this weekend this loads of motorhomes you can look around and get an idea of what would suit you and you can say hello to some funsters.

No. A motorhome is not going to do the mileage of a car or a van. They are built on vehicles capable of pounding the roads day in day out yet rarely ever do so. Therefore it need not be considered as you would with a car or van.

Hi and Welcome Robert , One of the MOST important things to check when buying any motorhome is the available Payload that the MH has , this is the amount of available weight left that you can put onto the chassis in the form of yourselves , water , fuel , equipment etc before the vehicle becomes overweight / illegal / unsafe to drive on the road.

And apologies for the delay in replying.
It took me a while to work out why I couldn't find how to reply, then I paid my fees :)

Unfortunately we wont be able to make the Malvern show this year - on hols.
But we have been before.
I spent a lot of time looking at converting a van but decided it wasn't cost effective for the time and effort needed.
But the time spent looking at layouts was well spent now that we're nearly ready to take the plunge.

We're looking for a used MH between ÂŁ15-20k... So we'll minimise our losses if we dont get on with it.
Must haves:
  • A fixed bed - I can't be asked to faff around making up beds each day...Ideally an island bed, but maybe singles... both of us get up during the night, at different times (!)
  • Swivel seats for front lounge - bad backs!
  • 2 additional belted seats
  • Air con - can it be retro fitted?
Is this realistic in a short-ish model @ 10-15 years old(?).

Payload... (Bart)
I know this is a silly question but how much do you need?
Do clothes and a couple of bikes (?) and fishing gear weigh that much?
I guess the following are significant...
  • Water?
  • Food
  • Gas
  • Batteries?
Have I missed anything?
Is there such a thing as a 'good' payload?

Methinks this is getting far too detailed for an intro, I'll start a new thread in a different forum.
But I'll keep an eye on this one in case anyone posts an answers.
Thanks all.
See you on the road.

@Robert Phillips the amount of payload you would want depends on so many factors like :
Will you want to travel with a full tank of water ( as in will you wild camp a lot ) if so then a 100ltr tank will take up 100kg payload.
How many passengers as well as the driver , as these all come of your available payload.
How many extra's will you have fitted to the MH eg. Spare wheel , awning , solar , extra batteries etc as these are not generally included in the manufactures spec sheet.
Same for fuel tank , a full tank of fuel can weigh a lot as well.
Gas tanks , how many and how full.
Simply put anything you put into or onto the MH comes of your available payload.
