Racecourse is not within walking distance its a very steep road and your looking at best part of 2 miles uphill (steep) on return journey

Thanks, as i said I wasn't sure how far it was. That was the nearest that came up with a websearch.

Causey Hill Park is nearer to Hexham than the race course site but as the name suggests its on a hill and at the top

I got that wrong, it *seems* like 5 or 6 miles down those single track back lanes.
