Copied this off FB written by a Stuart Parry an ex copper, I am sure he won't mind it posted on here.

As we all know motorhome are prone to being stolen as an ex copper one small bit of advice i can give is have a number plate fitted to the roof of your pride and joy when stolen they change the plates within minutes but never look on the roof

The ANPR cameras along the motorway network on the bridges pick up the plate on the roof hope this small tip helps one of my fellow motorhomers to get thier vans back

Great idea if your van is stolen as a recovery tool. Not such a great idea if you are going on holiday. #justputtingitoutthere

You used to be able to buy large stickers to put on the roof to make up a reg no or post code.
They were quite popular with tuggers a few years ago.

Richard.

I agree but I think the camera only "Reads" number plates, even on the roof and from the front and rear.

There are sometimes "bears in the air" though... especially if you report it missing, they will keep an eye out I'm sure...

I wonder which plate would be most effective, front or rear ?
I'm guessing the cameras vary by location. Some capturing front images, some rear images, some both...

Hopefully the software is good enough to recognise the plate regardless of colour or location.

Presumably we are assuming thieves have changed the number plates on both the front and rear otherwise surely the cameras would already know it's registration number..
Then all we need is for the police to know it's stolen and have a vehicle able to find it despite it having an unknown number plate on i.e. Not the one you have on the roof and the one they are probably looking for.
Is all this beyond plods capabilities?

Buy on eBay a fraction of the price, no docs needed I just paid £12 for a pair.
I wonder if they are strictly legal and meet the appropriate British Standard (fine for the roof)?

The British Standard for number plates: -

The British Standard sets out the characteristics of the number plate. This includes visibility, strength and reflectivity. To meet the British Standard, each number plate must be permanently and legibly marked with the following information.

- The British Standard number (currently BS AU 145d)

- The name, trademark or other way of identifying the manufacturer or supplier

- The name and postcode of the supplying outlet

Just read this on FB too and was about to post it when I spotted this thread. I'd never read this before and thought it a brilliant but of advice.

Good point, since it is a non standard plate, it does not need to conform to standard. I hadn't thought of that! :D

Yes they do. They are identical in every way to plates bought by producing your documents. The sellers get away with this practice by selling them as 'Show' plates. Simply demonstrating how an ill-thought through piece of useless legislation can be circumvented.

Just ordered 2x Front and 1x Rear for £12.75, two for the MH roof front and back, one as a pitch marker for the odd occasions we use British campsites.

Nice idea but I rather suspect that APNR will be looking for vertical plates rather than horizontal ones. There may even be some intelligence in them to avoid picking out the plates being carried on transporters and, if so, may cause one on the roof to be ignored also.

Having said that, there’s little expense in trying it.
