Hi everyone,

We have taken the plunge to 'hire' a motorhome in order to travel to Blois in the Loire. This intention is to start here for a 10 day cycling trip along it's banks.
We have NEVER driven/used a motorhome, ever but really looking forward to it. We have already gained some useful info from you all i.e. avoiding Paris + we thank you !
We have invested in the 'Aires' book but all advice would be gratefully accepted.

One question is that we plan to stop and camp half way between Calais (Le Shuttle) + Blois so we have plenty of time to get used to the van on our first day, anyone able to help on best area + where we could stay.
A suggestion was to stay at a municipal site in Bernay + another in Blois, Chaumont-sur -Loire. Following that we will move along the river as and when (hopefully, we will meet + collect advice and info 'en route' !)

Do we have to book these places in advance or just 'turn up ?' :helpsos:

All practical advice accepted for our first motorhome adventure !!!!!!!!!!

Cheers all, good to meet you. :Eeek:

Time to dig out my school French, oui ? !

Greetings,

Half way between Calais and Blois would be in the Rouen area (if you want to avoid Paris, and who would blame you.)

Just south of Rouen on the D6015 where it crosses the River Seine, is a town called Pont de L'Arch. It has quite a nice Aire next to the water.

Finance Warning. Hiring a motorhome is a sure fire way of making yourself poorer. 10 nights and you will be hooked and a visit to a dealer to buy one is almost guaranteed.

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!

Hi, I'm sure you will have a wonderful time.

We felt slightly confused and overwhelmed when we first used our van, but it's all easy really. It's just a series of systems, they break down to these..

Water...you need to suss out the way to fill your van (ours has a pump hose) others use a watering can or a hose with connectors. We fill up completely whenever we can.

Dumping water... After you've used said water it will drain into a grey tank, there will be a tap on the outside of the van, drive over the drain (on the aire or campsite) and loose the water.

Gas... This will be used for your hot water, heating and cooking. At the time of year you are going heating won't be an issue. Make sure you know how to heat your water, cooker is easy.

Electricity...there should be a cable you plug into the van and the campsites sockets this means your fridge and sockets will work. (Your fridge maybe a 3 way meaning it will run on the battery when you are driving, gas if not on EHU or electric if you are hooked up).

You maybe able to manage without EHU (electric hook up) we do, but we don't know anything about your hired van.

Batteries. There will be at least 2 one for the engine just like your car. One for the habitation area of your van. Only thing you need to know about either is don't let them go flat!

Toilet, there will be a water supply to flush (which you fill) sometimes it's a separate tank or fed off your main tank.
You may be supplied with additives for the cassette.
Use the loo, when it's full empty it.
Best thing we bought are happy bowl liners. Let eBay be your friend!

Hope this is of some help, another tip..beware wall/people/animals when reversing. :ROFLMAO:

Don't bother booking into municipal sites, even if you can. This is assuming you are not going the first two weeks of August!

I would get a guide book for French sites and use that. Your local bookshop should have a selection.

Sounds like you are going to park the van for 10 days while you go cycling. Seems an expensive way to cycle but do check your van insurance, it may not be covered for being left unattended for so long.
