Briefly from my only visit to Portugal I entered on the main road from Salamanca to Porto and upon entry on that motorway I had to pull to one side and register a credit card against my reg number. The automatic electronic tolls were collected via overhead gantry cameras. These were the new toll motorways.

The old motorways were still toll barriers.

If you don’t enter on a new motorway, but use one, I believe you can register for auto payments at a post office as the self registration points like I used are few and far between.

This was a few years ago now when the auto toll motorways were brand new so things may have moved on now.

hope this helps

How are you entering Portugal.
If you are going across the border from Seville to the Algarve on the Motorway, then you simply turn into the border service area on the Portuguese side and drive to a clearly marked area that has an Anpr camera and a machine to enter your vehicles Reg. No. and your CC details.
From then on, the cameras on the motorway pick up your No. and take the appropriate fee.

Some motorways are PAYG some are electronic tolls, sometimes a PAYG one turns into an electronic one with no exit before getting into the section.

On the electronic ones there are 3 boarder crossing where you can register a credit card you need to to renew it after 30 days. Also you can buy virtual pre paid toll cards on their website.

Once you get your head round it, its quite straight forward.
I ended up on a electronic one I just registered online for the virtual toll card.
The tolls are supposed to come off the virtual card in 24 hours but being Portugal it's normally at least 5 days.

They have a good English speaking help line.

I am there at the moment. Easy as I have a Bip & Go tag. For those without, entering at the four main crossing points, you need to register your VRN and payment card details at an automatic booth at the border. The tolls are then paid automatically. Better to avoid motorways and enjoy the countryside.
There are forum members who are much better informed and I am sure they will share their wisdom.

I can assure you POH, if I could help you, I would, but I have no experience of Portugese Tolls..................yet.

Maybe you can advise when you come back. ;)

Good luck,

Jock. :)

I'll try.

I think the complication is caused by the actual toll infrastructure being run by one company and the payment system by another CTT - their Post Office.

I assume you've seen this site? :- https://www.portugaltolls.com/en#como-pagar

I've edited the relevant page slightly IN CAPITALS.

Traditional Toll System
Carro

Toll barriers where vehicles must stop. These include lanes for manual payment - collect a ticket as you enter the highway and pay the toll for your trip WITH YOUR CREDIT CARD when you exit. THERE IS ANOTHER LANE (USUALLY THE LEFT ONE) IF YOU HAVE A SPECIAL DEVICE. AVOID IT
As you approach the toll barrier you will see the following sign:
Portagem

Exclusively Electronic Toll System
Carro 2

This system consists of gateways mounted on highways that detect vehicles passing through, there being no need for physical toll booths or for vehicles to stop. A panel near each gateway shows the toll fees to be paid.
Click here to see which national highways use an exclusively electronic toll system.

ME AGAIN -

1. Make sure that the first time you enter Portugal you do so at one of the entry points shown in this (helpful) website (where you'll also get some more help with your question). :-https://gotoportugal.eu/en/toll-roads-in-portugal/

2 I use one of the options for payment on this website :- http://www.tollcard.pt/fetcwcm/wcmservlet/en/comprar/comprar-online.html

I use the option to buy electronic toll cards online ( you can also buy them at Post Offices)

3, pre-load it with enough to see me complete a journey by calculating the costs from the portugaltolls website maps.

It IS an overcomplicated system - but once you've set your account up pre-loading it is easy and the tollcard website allows you to see the amounts you've loaded, the movements and costs you've incurred and the balance of your account.

One tip - the balance expires after 12 months of inactivity - so if you're returning just put E5 on your acclunt before the time limit, and then preload prior toy your next visit.

Whew - there we are, clear as mud.

Cheers

Spike

Someone will be able to help you on here I am sure (y) Maybe they are all asleep:giggle:

There's another thread that may be of interest. It looks like an ancient thread but it's recently been updated. Posts 13 and 23 for example.

You can buy toll cards at the CTT post offices or you present your ticket at a booth for payment. you get a ticket when you drive onto a toll road and pay when you get off. They also have toll card outlets along the routes.

Maybe some toll roads are like that, but the roads we were on were entirely electronic, with gantry cameras and nothing else except a sign showing the charges. No barriers, no tickets.

We ended up on one by mistake a couple of times. Never managed to work out how to pay retrospectively but never received any fines.

As philann says you still have time to get an emovis tag for Spain and Portugal, they have a uk office number on web site. Makes life so much easier.

Captain Clueless here. We were in Portugal in March (First time by road) and we paid tolls at booths. I had no idea, and yes, I should have read up about the rules saying that there were electronic gantries on certain roads. If the weather had been better we would not have been on them. We decided to get to The Algarve as quickly as we could.
So, I have registered with the website and sent them a message stating exactly that. TBF, I have no idea if we passed through any automated sections. I will post up any relevant responses.
Many thanks to the OP and other posters for putting this up.
Take care and safe travels.

When you arrive at the Portuguese border there’s a machine to enter your registration and credit card details and then your card is automatically charged using number plate recognition as you drive on their motorways!

Be aware though. when you change motorways, one toll system can end and a different one begins but as I found to my cost this fact is not clear on any signposts.

EasyToll for the electronic tolls and near field on phone for the rest. EasyToll very easy to use via app.
You can get a dongle but theres really no need.
