Help urgently needed please. We have a Carthago compact-line and I have destroyed the fridge vent cover on the roof by driving under a low bridge, so the ventilation unit is now exposed to the elements. Does anyone know whether we should cover it with plastic to keep the rain out (which means we then couldn’t use the fridge as it would be un-ventilated - not ideal while we are on hols in France) or whether rain wouldn’t worry it if it got in?

I'd seal it up, switch the fridge off and buy a coolbox 👍

Yes you ideally need to cover it with something, go to a DIY store and/or a supermarket and have a mooch round the guttering, drainage, and any other sections that have plastic bits, even crates, food boxes etc to see what you can find to adapt to fit for now - don't forget some suitable sealant too.

If you have a Tech Tower FF with silly oven above like ours, then you might find the roof vent is for the oven, not The FF as that has top & bottom vent on the van sidewall.
Any bit of flat plastic should act as a temp repair, just put it over the hole in the roof and gaffer tape the edges, should do you until you get home. i.e storage box, or Tupperware food box lid.
Carry on using your fridge it that is the case.(y)
Good luck.

Go to a plumbers merchant/ builders merchant and get a "mushroom vent cover" and some Silkaflex. That might get you by meantime.

If you can salvage any bits of the destroyed unit I'd be looking at gaffa taping the whole lot together and using a tube of mastic sealant.
If that's not possible build a small continuous bund wall, maybe 25mm high, all round the aperture in the roof using bits of plastic board easily obtainable from mr.bricolage, use mastic sealant to fix this to the roof...then on top of the bund, and only at each corner, raise the bund height by another 25mm, this could be done when originally cutting the board by allowing each end to be 50mm high and the rest 25mm, and then on top of the four corner higher bits mastic a thin metal plate, making sure that it overhangs the bund below so that it will shed water onto the roof and not down the vent hole, and you've now got a means for the fridge CO fumes to escape through the all-round 25mm gap above the water tight bund. The metal plate could be an oven plate.

Lots of variations to the above, but I hope it gives you and idea.

We are at Leroy merlin I La Rochelle now, having a root around for something suitable. I’ll let you know what we find! Hugely supportive of you all, thanks.

It's a standard Dometic part so you should be able to get a local dealer to order one for you, there are 3 different versions as far as I can see.
They are available on Amazon if you are on a site you may be able to get one delivered.

Ring your UK dealer for a part number maybe? They may be able to help or point you in the right direction. There is always the possibility that they have one on the shelf and could despatch to you if you are in one place for a while.

There is a Narbonne camping car spares shop amongst others in La Rochelle. They're a big franchise in France and may be able to help you out. Some speak English but there's always Google translate, or take a picture out of the roof vent and show them.

Unfortunately nothing to salvage - I smashed it!
If you're gonna do something, do it right! 😄

Unfortunately not, but thank you. I have found something similar on eBay but I need to identify exactly which model fridge/freezer I have now ….

Reimo in Germany have them in stock & half the pricee of Amazon.
