This re my daughter's van ... it keeps stalling in dangerous places ... traffic light, crossroads and roundabouts. In order to get it going again she has to really rev it to a ridiculous level and it isn"t the way she drives .. it happens with others. It is almost as though the fuel suddenly has a blip ... recently she had a new hose so it can't be that. Any suggestions please.. Thank you.

Hello Joy, I know it will cost, but has it been serviced recently? It could just be something simple that would be picked up at service, if it has just been serviced take it back (y)

Joy it sounds as if it is being starved of something either air or fuel........check that ha air filter is clean first of all........if clear could be dirty fuel.......in your case you may need to get someone to have it given a once over.

Blocked air filter.....it would do it all the time and belch out black smoke when it did run.
Blocked fuel filter.....it wouldn't rev properly at all.
Electrical fault....Maybe a faulty fuel cut off solenoid or similar but could also be an intermittant faulty crank or cam position sensor.
Faulty fuel pump.

Clutching at straws as its impossible to diagnose without being there.

Don't know how old it is Joy.
You say it had a new fuel pipe fitted.
If it's got a mechanical injector pump, rather than a high pressure electric pump, it may be drawing air in between the tank and lift pump or tank and injector pump if its a combined pump......possibly at the fuel filter if not the new pipe.
At higher revs it may not be as noticeable as more fuel is being pulled through the system.
If it's a JTD engine this won't apply but if its a TDiD it could apply.

if the old fuel pipe was replaced because it was perished it may well have caused the fuel filter to partly block up

If it's an older type of van, check if it has a rubber priming bulb or pushbutton near the filter, these sometimes perish and draw in air at low revs, stalling the engine (y)

Hi Joy
if you hold down the left mouse button and scroll over/highlight what you want to copy you can then paste it into word or on an e mail. You may need to delete all the unwanted bits -avatars etc

Do you know anyone that could do a code read depending on age? Unusual for a diesel to stall at low revs. Some of the vacuum pipes may be old and cracked, there are lots of them.............

Hi Joy, I have the workshop manual for the old mercedes vans that your daughter can download to help her mechanic trace the fault
https://www.dropbox.com/s/grfvdred22pbytc/Mercedes-207-208-210-307-308-310-408-410D.pdf?dl=0

Wow. Thank you. Will pass that onto her. It will help her feel a bit more in control. She is a very nervous driver and like me when it comes to maintenance. That will be a huge help. Thank you. :)
