Hi everyone

We spent most of yesterday on Italian autostradas having crossed from France by the Frejus tunnel € 56 ! On our way towards the lakes we encountered various tollbooths some payment in advance to a person and a few automated ones until finally the last one went wrong somehow by us putting the ticket in followed by a Visa card which had been accepted in other booths . The toll card was spitted out several times as well as our Visa debit card and the queue behind was building ....finally I did exactly the same as before and the speaker
said Arrivederci ! And up the barrier went and off we went wondering what we had done wrong ! We still have the ticket! By then we had rejected 2 Aree de sostas one was up an impossible squiggly road and should not be in the Bord atlas St Antonio De Susa ....you would freak out if you were in a mini let alone a 7.5 m motorhome on the access! The next one was Chivasso where after another stressful stretch on bumpy road we discovered a circus on the Site!
Finally we arrived by a lake in Viverone in a campsite type aire ....don't know how much as yet since the assistant just said Domani , Domani and went .In the bord atlas it says €16 . It is Ok and has hookup but being the weekend it has a few noisy kids running around . We will be heading to lake Maggiore later and would appreciate any info about quiet aires or campsites there or anywhere in the Italian lakes .We try to avoid ones with pools and slides which are a kid attractant ! We have the Bord Atlas as well as the Acsi cc on board .

Any help would be much appreciated .

Hilldweller - where are you?

I think you need to wait till Hilldweller gets up.

Always gives lots of good advice regarding Italy.

But happy to give it a bit of a bump :thumb::thumb:

Hi cobweb,it looks all ok for you at the toll booths, the ticket will be the receipt and if the baria goes up that's to say that the payment has been accepted, otherwise the baria would not go up and arrivaderchi,(good bye) and Damani Means to morrow, hope this helps you and safe and happy travels:thumb:Alf.

We're in Diano Marina having come from Lucerne round Milan and down to the coast on the tolls. Most seemed to be automatic and we have given up with money and paid with card that has only a small amount of money on it.

We had the same as you voices barking Tende tessera? and not liking it then accepting it. I think the Italian temperamen is built in to the Robotic system in the machine. A Joke !! I love the Italians.

We are enjoying our sosta time here but it may be out of your way...PM me if you are interested.

Thanks

We did the Diano Marina bit a few years ago and now hope to spend some time in more northern parts . We enjoy gentle cycling and had planned to do some of the Austrian Danube as well as the river Drau in Austria before returning north via the Northern Rhine and the Moselle . Before that we hope to find some decent cycleroutes here on the Italian lakes but lack the information since this part of the trip was completely unplanned . So any info on cycling and sites and aires on the Italian lakes would be welcome .

We stayed at Camping Royale overklooking Lake Orta ealier this year and we really liked it - not really suitable for children, incredible views over the lake, very dog friendly and the owner was so very friendly and helpful. Just 1 hour 20 mins approx. from Lake Maggiore. :thumb:

Maggoire we stayed at cannobio . Has a Sunday market and lovely restaurants along the lake. We stayed at the camping international paradise site. Beautifully kept site very well run right on the lake, 10 minutes walk into town . Not the cheapest but really enjoyed it there.

Hope it helps

Frejus tunnel is ridiculously expensive. That's half a tank of diesel, go over the pass, it's scenic and uses hardly any fuel going down the other side.
