Running Windows 10, just discovered that I can't get into Word in any way! Bit of a bugger because got quite a bit in there; SatNav favourites, Christmas card list, work records, etc. Anybody have any ideas how to get up & running again? There was a Windows update yesterday, could this have caused it? Can I go to a restore point & fix it that way? Thanks for any input.

Have you tried opening file explorer and typing in “word app”?

How do you use word? is it on your computer or do you use office 365?

Do I assume it (MS word) has been operating?. I have been having issues with windows 10 from day one. The most recent "incarnation" update, ran for over 12hours and then locked at 82% (a known issue see the M-S Forums) So long as you had a working Programme backing to a restore point might work?. Another thing with Win10. for some reason it requires frequent Re-Booting. It`s almost as if it corrupts the code and needs to be re-coded periodically. I am currently running (have been since the beginning) A Dual Boot. and occasionally get so sick of Win10 and it`s stupid "foibles" that I revert to win 7 which for me still works and does everything!. Eg; I can see and access all my computers on the network in 7. but not in 10. 2 computers will not "talk" to it in fact they don`t even show!. even though they too are running windows (7).

Fortunately, it's a 😀. Word still working.

For the OP there are no restore points in W10. If the usual reboot isn't working and you can wait you might find MS send out a fix in a few days.

Google Docs can open Word files and being online won't involve a new program being installed.

It is worth loading OpenOffice as a backup anyway.

There was an issue. With 7. in that some stuff would not run on the "Home" version but needed the "Pro" version to work. Any chance there is a similar issue here?. My laptop runs 7 Pro and 10 Pro but swmbo`s only runs "Home". A "cold" re-boot has been known to work (sometimes), shutdown, power right down, even remove the battery, wait at least a minuet and then power up and re-boot? Was a regular thing back in the "DOS" days.

Useless information time. The Commodore 64 was launched in 1982. (My First). Patched to an old B&W T-V!.

Doesn't Word even launch anymore?
What about Excel?

If Word last worked before recent updates then it is - as you are doing - checking if a recent update has caused a problem.
Do you know if you do Windows OS updates and the optional "Any other MS app" updates?

Gave up using Word long time ago, mainly because MS wanted lots of money for features I'd never use. Now use Open Office which has all the features I need, including word processor, spreadsheets, database and presentations, and is compatible with Word documents - and costs me nowt!

But if you suspect the update is causing the problem just go to Settings/ Update/ History and I think you should be able to uninstall the latest update, which should put you back to where you were.

Found out I can run a system restore but only back to this morning. Anyway, thought I would give it a go. Now seems stuck on restoring the registry........

For people looking for a free alternative to MS Office applications like Word, as well as OpenOffice there is also LibreOffice (that I prefer):

Apple Time machine is brilliant for home backup, when my MacBook was nicked brought a new MacBook and all my docs video's pictures etc were placed back to where I had left them. (y)

I know it doesn't help if you are using MS, Apple isn't perfect but in the past decade or so of using Mac's I have never suffered data (document) loss

Hi Ninovan my wife works as an engineer with Microsoft programs and she has recently been pushing out the W10 update to a large number of machines on the network and I just asked her and she has not experienced any issues with her companies users that have been updated so far (we are talking hundreds here) and they use office suite, which version of word was it and have you tried right clicking a word document in file explorer and then using open from the menu or open with (the later should only be necessary if it has lost its association) sorry if I am teaching my granny to suck eggs here.

If you have any other info on the issue I will ask her if she has any ideas.

I didn't have word,I use Libre Office, but as I'm learning Excel at the moment I loaded my old copy of Office 2003, after the windows 10 update and it works well with the update
However I don't think the OP has a copy to reload as it was pre loaded with the laptop, it may still be in program files in C drive and be re set from there

Not at all Gerby . Looks like I need all the help I can get!! My restore idea didn't work :( Will try right clicking in File Explorer (if I can find that ). Edit.... found that, now trying to open docs.

no worries, when you right click OPEN will be at the top, if that doesn't work Open with is about a third the way down normally and when you hover over that a sub menu should open with word there, if it isn't then try selecting choose another app (or something like that) you should get a list then of all available apps on your pc

The power of Fun is amazing. (y) Still couldn't get anywhere with Word, but as The Ex-Gasman & MyrtleGuru suggested, I tried Libre Office & can now at least get to the files. I guess I'll just leave it like that at the moment & just see if it comes back at some time in the future. Thanks everyone for all your help, another good reason for being a Funster. I was nearly ready to bin the lappy! :drinks:

tofo I think it must be a lifetime sub cos I can't find anything about subs & payments in the past. Thanks anyway ;)

With Libra Office you have many options when you save a document, if you want to be able to open it in Word, save it as a word document

I've just remembered, I did a major win 10 upgrade on my laptop about 6 months ago and Office 365 disappeared

My laptop also came with it pre-installed, I had the license key so simply re-installed it via a download

Now that you've got it working BACK UP ALL YOUR STUFF onto an external drive/USB/the cloud etc!

You should be able to find a list of all of your installed programmes in alphabetical order by clicking on the button at the bottom left of the screen, and then scroll down to get to Microsoft Office. Click on the arrow and all of the installed MS Office programmes will come up.

You say it was installed when you first got it. It is rare nowadays to get a lifetime copy of MS Office as standard unless you pay extra for it. Likely that this was a "free" offer of a subscription to MS Office 365 for a limited period? If so that is a yearly subscription service and you have to pay each year to keep using it. Or could it be a pirated copy put on by an unscrupulous dealer? In that case Windows 10 has a programme checker that will delete suspect MS programmes.

BTW Windows 10 had a "quality" update yesterday, but is was not a major one and nothing much important has changed as far as I can see. I can certainly get to all of my installed programmes, including my trusty version of MS Office 2007, which is still giving sterling service.

Just want to add something to help Ninovan Just looked at the latest log of the update on MS's website and discovered that there is known fault as follows

"We have received reports that some users cannot open apps after installing this update, especially Microsoft Office apps. Affected users might also receive an error, such as, 'Windows cannot find "c:\program files\microsoft office\root\office16\winword.exe" Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.'

This issue has been resolved by Avast. This issue only affected devices with certain versions of Avast or AVG applications and was addressed with an update to their respective products. For more information on this, please see Avast's forum post."

So it looks like you were not mistaken. The fault was caused by your Antivirus software, but has now been resolved by them. So if you update your Avast or AVG you should be able to get MS Word back.

And after I said I have no problems with the update I subsequently discovered that this update prevents my Brother printer from working! Again the MS website says this is a known problem and they are working on it. I have therefore uninstalled the update until they report a fix.

My thoughts too

I would just use google drive and word process on there. Everything is then automatically saved you can access it from your phone or if the laptop packs in a replacement without any hassle. You can upload your existing documents to it. The free storage will probably easily cover what youve got.

I have received an email from a friend who is a bit of a techy and he has advised anyone running Windows 10 to pause the update for a while as he has reports of several issues including distorted screen making it almost impossible to read.. Mainly seems to be affecting Lenovo machines.
