Hi, We have the same model fridge/freezer. It would light and then the gas cut off. I thought it was the thermocouple but in the end it turned out to be the spring valve. The accepted wisdom is to give the valve casing a gentle knock and it might start working again. We had ours replaced two weeks ago in Agadir. The thermocouple is a universal part you don’t need the Dometic one.

If you mean my reply, follow the link in my post. That shows all items for your fridge. The thermocouple is well down the page. There is also a 'Help and Contact' button top left corner of page. On there you will find contact number or have an online chat. They may be able to give you an idea of the delay in getting an item to you.

Otherwise, it may well be worth following up Barchetta47's post re it being a universal item and see if there's a dealer local to you in Portugal who can help.

Best of luck(y)

Hi I have a similar problem although not in Portugal on the way to Morocco sadly. My Dometc fridge doesn’t work on LPG...doesn’t fire up the boiler at all....think I ve got too much to do sorting out other issues and installing things so anyone know of a good Dometic Engineer in the Hampshire,Surrey,Dorset,Sussex area unless of course someone knows the problem and point me to something to give a bash...

First question: Has it ever worked on gas? If it has, have you got gas at the cooker? If yes, is the gas feed to the fridge turned on? ( there will be a set of 4/5 isolating valves behind a small panel somewhere in the kitchen area). If that is turned on, then you may well have an issue with the fridge solenoid, which is a silver cylinder in the left lower back of the fridge. Take off the lower cover, and give the silver cylinder a tap with a spanner. That may well free it up. Otherwise, see if there is any rubbish around where the flame should be - bottom right of the back of the fridge, and clear that if so. You may also need to use a piece of electrical wire or small bore flexible plastic tubing to push up the flue, but be careful not to force anything!! Alternatively, see if there are any motorhome engineers nearby, and call for help!!!

Presumably it did when new...it’s a 2004 but have only just purchased it so don’t know when it last did....no gas bottles when I bought it so couldn’t test it. Yes cooker works. Yes isolating valve done.

SO, of I go outside and take grill off and start tapping and poking....thanks...

So can’t see anything looking like the thermocouple in previous post..gave everything a bash...which bits the flue...

Sorry pictureS seem to all be coming round the wrong way 😥

The thermo couple is behind the cover for the burner, it's the other end of one of those wires, it sits across the burner

Right found it....started to here some ticking and at one point think I even saw a small flame...my orange light on the switch has now started flashing....it wasn’t doing that before. My old van Inhad to push and turn in the gas and ignition know and hold it for 15 seconds so the gas could come through...this one doesn’t have that.

I’ll get used to this camera one day 🙄..on iPad can never work out which way to hold iPad to get picture right way around.

Think I’m going to have to take out the big metal plate that is covering the burner which means taking out the cardboard or whatever they are made of heating pipes 🙄. Maybe give it a brush and blow.

It probaly needs a clean take the burner out and the jet give it a clean,it should be ok then.

Looks like your opening is smaller than any I have seen/worked on before, but the fridge looks similar!

The picture showing the plastic cup with a pipe going to it shows the burner cover just to the right of it. Note the little cutout at the lower LEFT side - this is where you can get a screwdriver in to reach the single screw that attaches it to the back of the fridge. Take off the plastic cup first, then remove that screw, and you will be able to wiggle the flame shield out, and see the actual ‘business end of the burner. You may see some soot/muck from the chimney on the burner. Give it a good blow/brush, and try to run the fridge on gas - you don’t need to put anything back to try this - it will work fine without the shield/cup to check function. If you get no flame, then you have a gas problem. You will need to follow the pipe back from the burner, and see if you can access the valve body that it attaches to - that’s what you may need to give a few taps to! It looks like it will be up under the bodywork , so you might need a torch, and something like a steel rod (socket set bar?) to give it a tap. If you feel confident, you could remove the burner assembly, and give it a clean, but don’t use anything but fine fuse wire or air to clean the actual jet, as it is easily damaged. The other thing to check is the sensor that sits in the flame, holding the gas valve open all the time the flame is hot. As soon as the flame goes out, that sensor turns the gas off - that’s why you need to hold the ignition button down for 10 seconds, so that sensor gets up to temperature, which holds the gas valve open!

Good luck!!

Crikey...thanks for all that...gonna give it a go...with regards to the ignition button...my previous Hymer fridge had an ignition button separate to the temperature dial but this one doesn’t...just has a temperature dial.

And a dial to switch between 12v 240v and Gas

Yes, sorry - got a bit confused with the appliances!! There is no button to hold on the fridge. When you turn it to gas you will hear the igniter ticking away then the (quietish) roar of the flame. That sequence may be repeated a couple of times if the thermocouple is a bit slow in warming up! If you hear that sequence for more than one or two ‘cycles’, then the thermocouple is probably done for. After a few attempts it will give up.

If you cannot fix it, you may well find a mobile motorhome mechanic covering your area. Have a look in your local yellow pages or, if there are any motorhome dealers nearby, ask them if they know of one, as they often use mobile mechanics to save having to have their own staff.

If you attempt to clean the jet use only air do not poke anything into it.

no thermocouple on that fridge works on flame rectification most likely needs the jet cleaning

thats not a great video i just linked to but it does let you see the parts you need a philips screwdriver and a couple of spanners to do it
bottom left theres a shield around the burner remove that and youll see the burner is held in position at the base of the flue with one screw remove that and the whole burner assembly can be gently piulled towards you
you need to get a spanner or grips on the square section and a spanner on the nut where the pipe enters once you have cracked the nut it will unscrew with fingers
the jet is a very small piece of metal it will either come out on the end of the pipe or stay in the burner dont drop it its a bugger to find again especially if it drops on the floor
just needs to be blown clean
at this point i usually go inside and try to light the fridge as this blows any dirt out of the pipe jus be sure the ignitor isnt in the stream of gas or pull the wires off
reverse above to put it back together
looking at the rust around the back of that fridge you might be lucky and find the burner is full of rust and scale and then you probably wont need to get to the jet

Well I’ve definitely got a flame....But it’s tiny...how big is it meant to be...which bit causes the flame to be stronger...had the fridge on all night but even the freezer Isn’t cold....put a small bottle of water in the freezer hoping to look at it next day to see it was solid ice but it was still water ☹️. Is it possible that it’s just too old a fridge...it’s 2002-4 model I think as it looks like the original fridge.....or can all fridges be repaired with the right parts...suspect a new dometic RM fridge that size will be expensive....about £800 odd 😥... mines an RM7271L or thereabouts....I suspect they are obsolete anyway...looks like an RMS8500 might fit but hoping not to go down that route.

The flame doesn’t have to be very big, as long as it encloses the flame failure sensor/s. If the flame is sustaining, then you may have a blockage in the flue. You might be able to get to the top of the flue via the upper grill. On mine there is a cowl, secured with a screw that would need the motorhome body removing to undo!! You can feel the heat from the flame, however, after a while of running the fridge. If you can’t feel any heat at all, you may have a blockage in the flue. If you have access to an airline, you could try removing the burner, and blasting air up the flue, which might dislodge whatever is blocking it.

If the flue is working properly, then you may have to revert to the ultimate ‘fix’ - take the fridge out, and turn it upside down (or maybe just on it’s side - never had to do it myself, but you will find plenty of references here if you search the forum) for a few hours, then replace it, and it should work again!!!

My fridge started defrosting on a THS last year. I popped the vent cover and there was a small blue flame present, I was expecting to see a feeble yellow flame if the problem was gonna be gas related. Decided to whip the jet out anyway as there was the obligatory pile of rusty dust under the burner. The jet and burner didn't look too bad, but when I nailed it all back together, the flames was at least twice as large and more importantly, it was making its familiar "roaring" sound. Fridge was working fine after that.

probably the jet if youve got a small flame
