Had a bit of a mishap yesterday and caught the bottom of a shop sign on the roof of the MoHo :swear:
Never having undertaken GRP repairs before I was wondering if any of you good folk can give me some tips on how to go about it.
If I can upload the pics you will see that it has punctured the skin (temporarily repaired with Gaffa tape.
I would appreciate any advice.......even if it is "take it to a dealer" ;)

John.

Simple enough repair, if you feel up to it : remove any loose bits, 'key' area, fill ( not too much) with car body filler, rub down, prime and paint.

Hardest thing will be matching the colour (hundreds of whites/greys

Otherwise try a local bodyshop (not the Bodyshop ) - shouldn't cost a lot for a professional finish(y)

Unlucky........ Sorry to hear of that.

The positive side is that it is in an area that is not easy to see and looks to be reasonably easy to repair for anyone who can do a bit of good DIY. Also, it does not look structural though that depends on how Autotrail Motorhomes are built.

It's probably a good idea to google "GRP repairs" and see if you think you can DIY. Also have a look around for a local boat repairer or similar. A dealer will probably just send it to a specialist anyway. Even a local car repair place could probably do it. Others will have much better ideas, best of luck anyway and keep us posted on progress.

Edit - just seen Burstner's reply

not long enough
I did similar damage to a car bumper once, looked like I had written can off at first glance :(

Mended and repainted in a day, looked as good as new, I don't do and for what it cost me I would not even try to mend myself, but mine would have been more visible than yours

The key thing is not to ask your MH dealer to mend it, do as suggested above, boat yard, car body shop, bumper specialists

Hopefully nowhere near as bad as you first thought (y)

your welcome...youre not the first and sure as hell wont be the last to have a minor alteration like that!!...

Edit - meant to add, whilst your waiting to get it done, give it a good wipe down with white spirtit/meths etc and get it taped up to stop moisture getting in - given where it is you need to make sure its sealed as you might end up sealing it in!! (been there done that)

When carrying out grp works the existing top gel coat needs to be removed from the area that needs repair. Use a small grinder or sander and get right back to the resin base.then you can apply a matting and resin, sand down and apply a gel coat then paint to match.always clean down at each stage with acetone,if you try to gel coat onto gel coat it will probably peal off in a few weeks.being a grp roof installer we make repairs as part of our works if you were closer I could have given you the correct resins and matting to carry out the works.

Thanks again Bungy.
I taped it up the same day......just as well I did as we had a terrific storm that night.

Thanks Bill.
I only wish your repair was as simple as mine seems to be.
Best of luck with yours. (y)

Nothing worse than a bad repair - especially on a motorhome - I'd take it to Johns Cross as they are local - no harm getting a quote
