Considering going to South France in January/February. Is the climate warmer and do many motorhome users go there at this time of year?

Nope!
Cold and closed!

Southern Spain or Portugal are the only places to get some sun and warmth!

There is a campsite near the coast Nice (niece not as in mice).

Has indoor heated pool but will not be very warm. Cannot remember the name.

Open all-years Cannes Mandelieu

Winter camping in southern France are usually in the Alpine ski areas.

Can be far too cold in the south of France, you can be lucky and get a warm spell, if the sun is shining, it can be warm, but once the sun has gone it's back to cold!! Really not reliable like Spain.
On the positive side, not too many tourists around at that time of year!!

We went in January 2015 - it was very cold - probably colder than the UK. Water was not easy to get as a lot of the aires had theirs turned off, and in some cases the water was frozen. The water in the motorhome froze and we had to run the generator to run the hairdryer to warm up the water tank so we had running water! We ended moving to the South of France for the better weather but as we got there the Mistral arrived! We found quite a lot of campsites closed & the ones that were open had minimal facilities operating. We wouldn't do France again in the winter months.

Our French dwelling members come to Spain (or Portugal) for their winters if they want winter sun. That tells you all you need to know if YOU'RE after winter sun.

Welcome to FUN.

:hi2: and w2f.

I think you'll find it way too cold, unless you're a fan of skiing and want to head into the Alps. France seems to miss a lot of the winter currents and air streams and it can be bitter. Worst winter I had there ( Dordogne) it was -19. -25 with wind chill. Pipes froze inside the internal walls of the house and it was like Niagra Falls when they thawed out :(
January and February were always the coldest months.
You'd be far better off heading to Spain, as others have said. Warmer, more things open and you could probably get to meet some other Funsters if you want.

Ever since lighting was by Calor gas.
Simple! Just put 'climate (wherever interests you) January' into Google. E.G Climate Monte Carlo January and it'll tell you average max 10 degrees, average low 8 degrees, average sunshine 5 hours............plus rainfall etc.
