Hi All!
I thought I would introduce myself. I am a retired Brit living in Cyprus. In the past, I have traveled around parts of Europe in hired camper vans. Starting in April 2021, there will be a RoRo ferry service between Cyprus and Athens. This means that there will be a legal means of driving from Cyprus to the continent. So, with that in mind, I am determined to acquire some sort of camper to get out there and take full advantage. Unfortunately, there are no no campervans here so I need to source one from outside the country. I am presently looking at the options of building a DIY conversion versus buying a motorhome. To make things harder, many of the bits of equipment needed to furnish a DIY camper are not available here so things are a bit more complicated.

Anyway, just wanted to say Hi and you will, no doubt, be seeing me around the forum....if I behave myself (y):LOL:

:welcome4: I’m really Glad you’ve posted this information as my sister lives near Polis and we were hoping that in 2021 we could take the van over to see her but I knew we may struggle due to the lack of a ferry (I thought we’d just wing it and maybe get on something as freight).

I can’t offer any information that would help you regarding buying or converting a van other than to say check with the authorities in Cyprus regarding import charges and matriculating a vehicle in Cyprus. We imported ours into Spain and they do clobber you on the tax and inspection of gas and electrical systems but it was still cheaper than buying the same vehicle new in Spain.

Best of luck and please let us know how you get on.

There is a Brit in Cyprus who specialises in transporting cars to the island from GB and back again. They do go in shipping containers though so depends on what size you are considering. I can get the details from our friend who has moved 4 cars that way. It might work if you are looking for a van conversion.

My sister did the same with her car, from the UK to Cyprus. The company that she used also dealt with the paperwork for her and transfer onto Cypriot plates. She was pleased with the service so I can also find out for you the information if you are interested.

Thanks Talaman. I spoke to my sister yesterday and she knew about the new ferry service. she‘ll let me know when it’s up and running and from what I’ve been reading they will cap the cost at 120 euros for a return ticket to include a vehicle. Thanks for your offer and best wishes for 2021, hope you find the vehicle you are looking for.

Welcome Talaman

Instead of e-mailing the ferry info maybe you could give a link to their website.

There used to be a couple of ships(Cyprus registered) that did a route Venice-Athens-Patmos-Rhodos-Cyprus. They were not vehicle carrying though.

I would be interested in whether this RoRo will stop anywhere between Athens and Cyprus, as if so, it could be useful for a motorhome tour of Greece, its island and Cyprus.

Alternatively are there any vehicle ferries from Turkey to maybe Kyrenia and what are the formalities/difficulties for getting from there to the South and then back again?

20 years ago the biggest issue was LHD vehicles as the Cypriots were not keen on having anything which would make them more like Mersin. That would mean either doctoring a vehicle on-Island or being whacked for importing a van from the UK. With a self-build, many parts could be cobbled off caravans but there never were too many of them in Cyprus either. Another option would be to store a LHD van in Greece and just use as and when. Will be over to Cyprus sometime in the next 5 years so hopefully this new service will survive :)
