Hedgehogs are still about….

Today, I think I saved a wasp. I found it half dead in the conservatory, it could hardly move. I got it to crawl onto a piece of paper and put it on the patio I then ran into the house and dissolved sugar with water and using a teaspoon drizzled it near to the wasp. It went straight to to it and drank it, after a couple of minutes it perked up and flew off. It turned to me mid flight and winked and waved goodbye (ok, that bit is a lie :giggle:)

We used to have lots of hedgehogs around, but then the badgers arrived. Luckily our one-eyes blind rescue hog that we’ve fostered is safe in our enclosed garden so they can’t get to him.

We have mice visit the garden and feeding box. He bites their heads off if he catches them in there (literally!). It puts the others off for a bit.

Please please don’t use poison in your garden. All sorts of things will eat it, or eat the thing you’re trying to poison and so it spreads to other wildlife.

Been asleep all day…..just popping out for a snack……😉

A new small possibly juvenile hedgehog has been sighted in my garden so I am putting food out again. This one is probably from a different locality An individual hedgehog seems to be foraging in my local area again.

Hopefully the badger(s) have moved on. Fingers crossed for the little chap.

Update: the small juvenile hedgehog comes early at about 9:30 pm, to get first dibs on the food bowl, before it gets completely dark. It eats about half of what I put in the bowl. It's now a mixture of calciworms, semi-soft hedgehog food, and Go-Cat small pieces (Duck and chicken with vegetables).

I guess there must be a second much bigger adult hedgehog that arrives later, judging by the size and shape of the poos on the grass, and the food bowl being empty by the time I get up.

A friend who volunteers at the hedgehog rescue charity tells me that it is unusual for badgers to eat hedgehogs, and they can co-exist. I guess one badger was too hungry to resist the urge.

At least I'm not finding any fresh rat poo and thare have been no sightings of it lately near the shed.

That also could be mating courtship, that tends to be a bit pushy as horny males woo reluctant females. It can go on for hours.
Yes - this went on for about 20 minutes the other night…….

We had several visitors on and off between about 10pm and 3am last night, three together at one time.

Two of ours had a serious spat last night…and one of them came off with a serious injury…..😕

He(?) came back a few minutes later to eat and drink…..no sign of him after that…..

No sign of the injured ‘hog over the last couple of days - it’s either recovered or gone off somewhere and died…..☹️

On a lighter note, this one was in full ‘nesting’ mode early this morning, having made about a dozen trips to bring new material into the Hog House…..👍
