Ive been reading up on the A class Hymer I’ve read a few times now that replacing the head lamp glass should it explode or break by stones flying up would cost around £1400 to replace. Would you be able to claim on insurance?

Is this the case for all A Class Hymer?

Went to see a couple of Hymer son Redditch (Motorhome Depot? to me they looked over priced pretty dirty and worn looking.

Sorry if I sound rude, but you need to look at your policy. If still in doubt, ask them.

I believe it's only 2007 onwards that have expensive headlight issues.
Older models (like mine) are reasonably cheap to replace.

The headlight in question is the Hella I think they look like cats eyes with glass front (see picture)we have them on our 2015 Exsis but have not had any problems yet (says I touching wood) and yes they are over £1000

yes you can, we had ours go and Hymer and TW refused to admit it was the known fault o_Oo_O

but it would simply go down as a policy holder fault accident damage, same as if you bumped into a tree

we just paid ours it didn't seem worth the aggravation, we also had a £500 XS making it even less attractive

I did wonder if it would be covered under the glass part of the policy but never bothered enquiring

£1520 fitted if you have one with headlight washers :(

Best way to protect them and minimise the chance of breakage is to replace the very hot daytime running lights with LEDs, less than £20 and cover the outer glass area with Lamin-X film or 2mm Perspex sheet.

No point worrying is it if they shatter you have to buy a new one if you invest all that money the overall cost of the van it's a small price to pay.

Podney I don’t actually own one yet :( I was just asking as I may have put me off. Looks like it’s the older models 2007 onwards so shouldn’t be a problem for me.

I see I doubt I will be able to find anything later than 2003 with my budget so that will be fine.

totally agree, the 21W halogens are ridiculously hot, we had already changed our, new ones come with new bulbs, dipsticks at TW didn't even spot the difference and gave it back with one of each o_O

plus badly fitted o_Oo_O

I do at least now know how easy they are to change, wouldn't use a dealer again (y) they might cost stupid money but are fairly quick to fit once you know how (y)

I agree but it depends on exactly how much you spend ,if its say 2007/8 model £ 1500 is a considerable sum against the cost of buying .but having said that it seems rare for them to be broken

Seems to me that older is sometimes better with motorhomes. But then I would say that wouldn’t I,not being exactly a teenager myself. Enjoy your search,we looked for a long time, and I fancied an older Hymer, but ‘Er indoors vetoed it as she says they don’t look nice!! Strange creatures aren’t they...tin hat on!

Any idea how easy the 'older' ones are to change?
I haven't changed one, so couldn't really say.
I do carry spare bulbs but don't look forward to the time when I need to fit one as it doesn't appear to be a simple task.
Having said that, so far every repair has been straightforward.
I think that for the most part, the perceived difficulty with A Class is just a myth, certainly not something I've experienced in eight years of ownership.

If I might ask a question related to this, if you have a canbus system, obviously, you will need canbus friendly led's, will the resistor heat up on the led and cause the same heat impact?

This has been covered a few times on here, it's on here that I learned my DRL's are not part of the Canbus system on my Fiat based Hymer, so Canbus bulbs are not required. I replaced mine last year and no problems with ordinary LED's fitted.
You could test if you have Canbus DRL's by disconnecting them and see if a light out symbol appears, if not you're ok.
I use these.

I think your point that the resistor, on Canbus bulbs, would produce heat is correct, though it would produce it in the plastic holder, not the globe area.

Have you a link to the led’s @Hils and Glenns i would much appreciate that thank you (y)

I went to our local motor factors, pretty standard things now I think (y) they are 12V 21W equivalent, think ours are 5W from memory

If I might ask a question related to this, if you have a canbus system, obviously, you will need canbus friendly led's, will the resistor heat up on the led and cause the same heat impact?

no problem with ours although I had expected it with all our other issues o_O(y)

The DLR's on the Ducato are not on the bulb failure circuit so you don't need ballasted bulbs or a balast resistor standard LED's are fine providing they are E marked.
