Since 1964 Gosh that makes me feel old.
Back in the summer we had our 1995 Peugeot 2.5 Swift Kon-Tiki out & were no sooner out of the gate when she sent out more steam & smoke that a destroyer.
This was accompanied by a very bad misfire & I thought that perhaps a head gasket had went fizz/bang but after a few minutes idling things cleared & she ran normally!
I checked her over thinking that perhaps water had entered the air cleaner assembly but, everything there was fine.
The sniffer found no exhaust gas in the coolant, so this ruled out a head gasket issue, leaving one possible suspect, the fuel filter.
There is a water drain at the bottom of the filter but, there was no water present when I drained it.
I didn't change the diesel filter as I knew that it was brand new in april.

Fast forward & today I had her out for a run before heading to Pitlochry for new year & she started misfiring again along with billowing white steam from the exhaust. It is definitely steam as it disperses very quickly & doesn't look like unburnt diesel.
She still starts first time, every time & idles perfectly, its only when your rev her up that the issue manifests itself.

Idea's please folks, we so want to be away at new year.

At that age it could be a leaky injector.
May be worth having all four serviced.
The steam may just be a coincidence and condensation settled out in the exhaust and 'burning' off when you rev the engine

Water in the diesel tank? condensation in tank?

My daughter had exactly those symptoms with her Bongo. Turned out to be a blocked fine fuel filter. I still don't know why it caused the exhaust to be white smoke/steam

cold weather starting can be with a miss if you have a u/s heater plug on that cylinder , and it will clear as combustion heats the cylinder . The steam white smoke will be due to the misfire causing partial combustion , and also the water vapour in the exhaust system getting heated up . eg some are a bit extreme :)

I am talking off the top of my head, so no criticism please. Could you have sticking valves? The water seems to be a red herring as present climate could be involved.

I swear I could smell diesel while watching that !!!

Thanks for all the suggestions folks,I really do appreciate all your help.
Despite the sniff test showing no combustion gases in the coolant, it turned out to be the head gasket!
Head not cracked nor warped, block ok, tis all fixed now & I'm relieved.

Thanks for the update. Glad to hear you got it sorted. Hopefully not too expensive. Lucky no crack or warp (y)
