This topic has come up before. I put gasoline into my diesel tank. Spotted it after I paid. Drove 20 metres and called ADAC. They emptied the tank for me. Cost me nothing except I had to refill the tank again.

I'm a taxi driver and one of my regular business customers put petrol in his diesel Jaguar XF the other day at Keele services on M6. Luckily realised what he'd done and did not start it or even turn ignition on (these do not use a key, but have a smart-card). He called out AA who recovered him all the way to North Wales and arranged for their own specialist vehicle to come to him next morning to drain it and came with a can of diesel. Recovery free but £195 for the draining service.

Halfords are selling a little device for £5 that sticks inside your fuel flap. When you open the flap the light-sensitive device calls out a warning "Stop, diesel, remember diesel'.It does this twice in case you have remote release and don't hear the first one. They are for sale on ebay as well and with postage I bought 2 for just over £5. A lot cheaper than the fuel-angel.

I half filled a company owned Land Rover Discovery with unleaded once, but realised before I started the engine. It cost me three hours while the car was recovered half way back to where I'd come from, cost the company about £200 for the flat bed and to drain the tank (plus the cost of the petrol which was removed) and cost me a lifetime of having the Michael taken after my wife told one of my best mates what I'd done

It was early morning and we had just left home on the way to ferry (& then Spain/Portugal) We had enough fuel to make France, and cheaper diesel, but Pamala insisted we leave with a full tank !!!! So of course, I topped up the tank with unleaded, I realised my mistake when there were no vacent slots for my nozzle. It's the old Land Rover we still have (low tech fuel system) I bought a bottle of diesel fuel additive and dumped most of it in the tank, and told Pamala it would be 'fine'
The next day, on the road South in France the motor started missing then stopped----------I called out RAC, while we were waiting I was reading workshop manual to see what is involved in injection pump change---------the first thing was remove 'stop' wire from pump, I thought, I have never seen that-----so I looked---just to pass the time (on the side of a busy main road) guess what?? it was off the connector!!!!!! Before we left I had changed the oil & filter and must have dislodged the wire as its 'in the way'
Wire refitted and running sweet when RAC arrived----had to explain what I had done (without any French!!!)
The rest of the trip to the Algarve and back home was problem free.
Land Rover still runs great

1960's mistake

Yep, I have done it, though a very long time ago. In fact it was 1968 when I had an Austin A40. Filled up, went to pay and the attendant quoted a price half of what |I had had. Luckily it was a day when I decided to be honest and point out her mistake at quoting the wrong pump. She told me I had put diesel in and they drained it at the garage at the rear for nothing (the mechanic swiped the fuel of course as they did in them days). I was lucky, it only cost me a tank of fuel.

I put 2 gallon in an 80litr tank about twice a year. it helps clean up emissions and as a cleaning effect on the injectors. its cheaper tha some of the diesel cleaners on the market.
Not ideal for running on neat. If you do accidently fill up with petrol .push to one side drain tank and slap your wrists .Best not drive on it. Could be costly.
I would keep what you drained out and use it slowly over the next few months abit at a time.

I too put a couple of gallons of petrol into mine annually to decoke.

Once put £20 of petrol into a rover and just topped up with diesel, and thren topped up a few gallons each time I went passed a garage and had no problem.

I was sent this link for preventing this, but do not know if any good?

Any thoughts much appreciated....

On a May Bankholiday a few years back I was off early to Loch Lomond from County Durham. On the Saturday morning I pulled in at half light and commenced to fill the tank. After a while I noticed the smell was petrol and stopped after about 10 gallons. I topped up the tank with diesel and went on my way. It ran a bit hot and there was a slight loss of power.

Parked up for the weekend.

On Monday evening I had a job to restart but it eventually went and I drove back to County Durham. Topped up the tank with diesel before I parked up and had no further problems.

I had that Volvo Estate for years after with no engine problems. The engine is the same one that was in the VW transporter.

I accidentally added 2 litres of petrol to my Fiat Ducato (2009) motorhome yesterday before I realised what i was doing. I then stopped and spoke to the garage owner who advised me to topped up the tank to max with deisel and It would be okay. Rightly or wrongly i then drove home about two miles. Any advise please, is it okay or should I add some engine oil or drain etc.

Thanks for the two responses so far but is it okay for the latest engines which i understand do not tolerate petrol that basically why I asked should I add some engine oil to increase the lubrication removed from the diesel????

Yep. At least twice. If I am not mistaken it was the same garage, they use black on all pumps where as others use green for Petrol and black for diesel. But most of the time I use veg oil, so don't have to worry about pump colour:ROFLMAO:

I usually fill the fuel pump filter with injector cleaning fluid and start it on that as part of the service :thumb: (taught this by a older but very good mechanic ) so now can I just dump a gallon of petrol in the tank and not bother with the cleaner ?

Hi Alan I shall chuck in a gallon to-day when I fill her up :thumb: I like the idea of 27 mpg and cleaning the injectors as I drive a lot better than paying around £6 and going no where :ROFLMAO::thumb:

:ROFLMAO::thumb: got back :thumb: chucked a gallon of morrys finest unleaded and about 12 galls of there diesel ( £ 64 ouch :ROFLMAO: )Set off as normal then after about one mile she started to white smoke, anyway I thought white smoke is not too bad ( better than black ) so I took her up to 75 for a couple of miles then had to slow down for a roundabout which she went clear at.Next up to about 55, still clear then about another half mile at 30 ish before getting home.Seems to be no ill effects :thumb: Will see how she goes on our next trip which was going to be tomorrow but due to the weather will probably be next week :ROFLMAO:Can't afford to go now I have paid for fuel :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:
On the plus side I saved about £30 using my filling adaptor to fill 3 gas bottles :thumb::ROFLMAO:

I put £20 worth in my wife's land rover. After a few miles the engine started missing my wife commented on this. I told her it was a bumpy road. She looked at the fuel receipt and said you've put unleaded in you bleeping idiot. I pulled over right away and called the AA. They have a dedicated miss fuel vehicle, and he arrived after about twenty. minutes. They pump the fuel out from the engine so that the whole system is clear of contaminated fuel. Then put in a few gallons of diesel to get you to a filling station. The AA chap said I was his third visit that morning. He put out a road sign warning other motorists FUEL TRANSFER IN PROGRESS. I said I feel a big enough prat without him telling every passing car. The cost was £210 including the diesel and a conditioner. He said that as a Freelander has a big tank £20 worth was a small amount and shouldn't have done any harm. A good Indicator is if the vehicle starts first time. Ours did, That was about 18 months ago and so far no probs. :winky:

Yes, been there. About 2005 very tired after a very long dayat the end of a very long week is my excuse, I got about 300yds and noticed misfire. luckily lay-by adjacent. recovery firm took me to their 24 hour premises - 7pm at night. they lent me a vehicle to go for a meal as i was in high wycombe. I returned and they had it sorted about 10pm. i was one of several that week, and even then it cost me £250. I was advised to keep quiet about it, as it would have invalidated all warranties, and an damage subsequent i could have been liable for. I have been very careful ever since

OMG - Yes we've been in the same boat too. Well not me exactly thank god - but my husband. However I was a passenger in the motorhome; which was equally as stressful; especially when your husband is cussing like a good un!

What happened was ....... we pulled into a busy petrol station after a particularly long drive and hubby proceeded to fill our near empty tank with fuel ..... suddenly I noticed him turn a deathly shade of white! He yanked open the drivers side door to collect his wallet and I dare not repeat the language spilling from his lips but whatever he said I couldn't make much sense out of him! Like a man possessed he headed off to pay for his fuel and when he returned (still looking like he was about to have a nervous break down) the attendant proceeded to place traffic cones all around our motorhome!!!! What's going on I cried and it was then that my husband announced he'd just shoved £80 worth of 'effin' petrol into our diesel tank! Yikes! "Stay calm! Stay calm" I plead! Now he's normally a laid back, take everything in his stride sort of man but what I was witnessing now was a side to his character I wasn't familiar with at all and so I wasn't exactly sure how to handle this person!

Anyway, the clearly unsympathetic petrol attendant; who'd obviously been party to this carry on on numerous occasions before, gave us a telephone number to ring. I rang them as hubby had lost the power of speech by this time and so I thought it best that I make the call! A local company did the job and they were very reassuring when I explained the situation and I must say the guy they sent was a lovely chap! He towed our motorhome to a safe place and told us to go and get a coffee and he'd ring our mobile
when it was all done!

Theccost was £160 and for that he drained off the petrol and because my hubby had, had the good sense NOT to start the engine,
he assured us there shouldn't be a problem. I think he put about a gallons worth of diesel
in for us too, which was enough to get us to a petrol station to refuel!

All in all, with what we lost in fuel and what we had to pay to get it all drained out, it cost us around £240 altogether, so a costly mistake was made but thankfully, not as costly or as catastrophic as it could have been if my hubby had not realised his mistake and had driven off!

What a day we had and I pity anyone who makes the same mistake!

Both my husband and myself are always extra vigilante now and we always double check the fuel pump! I often wonder why the car manufacturers don't design and install fuel fillers that prevent these costly and often
disastrous mistakes from ever happening as it seems to be a common occurrence!

Now there's a good idea for someone to present to the Dragons Den gang!

Presumably one nozzle has a larger diameter than the other. Now it's easy to stop the big nozzle going into the fuel filler (by fitting a smaller inlet pipe) but how do you stop the smaller nozzle going into the tank?

It could be done by adding different shapes to the nozzles but this would be difficult to achieve in practice as the forecourts would need the existing types of nozzles for the older cars and the new type for modified cars. Very complex and expensive I wold imagine.

Just shows how prices have risen and engines are more complicated.Twenty years ago I put diesel in instead of petrol. I drove two minutes down the road and it stopped. A local garage towed me in and flushed out the tank. It cost me £20.
