Just found my 2001 Pilote Galaxy 270 A Class van cost £44,992 on the road in June 2001. Google suggests £1.00 in 2001 is now worth £1.66. So according to my schoolboy maths that means the van would cost £74,686 now. Of course it is difficult to compare an old model with a modern equipped van, however a new 2020 Pilote Galaxy 600L A Class now comes in at £68,505, not sure if that is on the road, which means in real terms now cheaper and for more equipment.

Much could depend on the Sterling : Euro exchange rate on the relevant dates chosen by the MH manufacturers to fix their UK retail price lists. You may need to use past retail list prices in Euros for the foreign brands like Pilote to make a fair comparison over time.

The normal RRP of a 600L with the usual UK pack and options list comes in at c£75,000+

Edit: That's for the Sensation spec and not the basic model.

I can't go that far back to 2001, but the UK market for motorhomes grew 83% between 2009 and 2018 ...more volume should equal lower costs and more competition meaning, yes I would expect more for less these days 👍

I've got some 2001 pounds which I'm prepared to part with for only £1.50 each so come on grab a bargain. :giggle:
By the way VAT was lower in 2001.

Going back a few years but in 1962 a Commer Bluebird 'Highwayman' was listed as £927 and was exempt from purchase tax. A VW 'Devon Caravette' on a Micro Bus was £970. For comparison a Ford Anglia De Luxe saloon was £445 plus £167 17s 9p purchase tax. A Mini Super de Luxe was £407 10s with £153 16s 6p purchase tax added . Prices are from the Earls Court motor show official catalogue. Those were the days .

Interesting comparison - the average wage in those days was just under £1000 a year. Nowadays around £29k so both van and car prices broadly in line.

Average house prices were £3,300 then, £248k now so 75 times greater than early 60's..
