We did some laundry on site last week and got back to the machine no more than 5 minutes after it ended, only to find a couple had already taken it all out and were putting it in a black plastic bag of their own (my own laundry bag was on top of the machine). Now, I know I should have been there when it ended but - 5 minutes (max) and it's not uncommon in the past to take someone else's laundry out if it's finished and you're waiting but given the Coronavirus situation I wasn't happy at all to have strangers handling my laundry. Am I being over sensitive?

After being asked for extra money because of the length of your van I'm surprised you stayed! I've only once been asked for extra money (8M van and car on trailer) for the trailer. I refused and they backed down. I would not have stayed if they hadn't. My logic was that I took up no more room than a caravan with car and if the trailer was an issue on the pitch I'd park the car on it.

And no, someone else handling your washing is not acceptable, especially at present.

If you’re not happy that someone else had to remove your laundry then you shouldn’t have left it . How were they meant to know when you were likely to return for it? You could have gone out for the day. What realistically is the chance that the person who removed your abandoned washing has Covid? What realistically is the chance that if said person has Covid that you would then catch it? If you did catch Covid from your washing what realistically are the chances of you becoming ill enough to need hospital treatment?

Perhaps the person that needed to remove your abandoned washing didn’t really want to touch it for fear of catching Covid from the washing.

No, but you definitely should make sure you’re back in plenty of time. It’s very annoying when you have to wait for someone to return.

Yes but we all are at the moment because we are living through such weird times and no one really knows what is for the best. Just try to stay kind to each other.

I'm afraid you've said it yourself, you should've been back in time for your washing, maybe this experience will make you do so next time. Its not up to others to remove your laundry. I hope you can get to enjoy the rest of your trip away.

Not having a lot of luck on this site are you? Is it a new experience for you, or have you been on other sites.?

We've been motorhoming for years and generally just rub along and don't grumble about stuff. It's only because of coronavirus that I wasn't happy about the laundry issue. Normally I'd be more than happy for someone to fold up my washing!

To be honest I don't see a problem with it, if they knew you were going to be back a few minutes after the machine had stopped they should have waited but as they didn't and wanted to do their own washing then I think it is reasonable for them to do what they did, at least they were putting it in a bag rather than just standing it on a table/chair or floor which is what some idiots might do. I wouldn't worry about CV on your washing as the chance of getting it from the 'quick' handling of the 'emptiers' would be extremely small, if you are at all concerned just leave it to one side when dry for a few days.

Just a thought ... are you sure they were just emptying the machine and not intending to make off with your 'special' undies? :blusher:

I'd offer them an iron too! ;)

The consensus amongst the boffins now is the risk of catching the virus by touching a surface is negligible. The main method of transmission is breathing in droplets someone else has exhaled. So if you were in the same room as these people this was a much greater risk than them touching your washing.

Am I being over sensitive?
No.I'd have had to wash it all again.:censored: .Then again I wouldn't be anywhere where there was anyone else without a mask, gloves, & sanitiser ,etc.

They shouldn't have touched your washing, but then I suppose they were not to know when you were coming back. Personally if I was worried about catching COVID I wouldn't be using communal launderettes.

I wouldn’t be happy for someone else to fold my washing, as that would mean I’ve been late back.

Surely it's easy enough to set an alarm or reminder for the time the washing is due to finish? I know my wife gets really annoyed by people who leave their washing in the machines and breeze back half an hour later. Still, I bet you'll remember to be back on time in future!

Does this mean I can stop washing my hands 30 times a day?

I never leave mine when using a launderette etc as many only have 2 or 3 machines and it's a pain enough having to wait till one stops etc without having to wait on the person coming back to empty it ...

I've seen me being sat in a launderette nearly 2 hours by the time I've washed and dried etc ....but that comes with the territory.

I read 80% air transmission, 20% surface transmission. Still enough to worry about if, say, you have compromised immunity. Personally I do have temporarily reduced immunity, so I now have a washing machine in my motorhome, admittedly more to avoid spending time in the presence of other people. I would have laughed at the idea before and I only got it because of the combination of Covid and reduced immunity, but I really like it and I may keep it after this is over, if it ever is.

From the NHS website:

Yes, clothes and towels can spread germs.

There are 3 main ways that germs are spread by clothes and towels:

  • when towels or bedlinen are used by more than 1 person germs can spread between them
  • when someone handles dirty laundry they can spread germs onto their hands
  • when clothes are washed, germs can spread between items in the process of being washed

As you are the one at fault I don’t think you have anything to complain about. How long were they supposed to wait? Keeping people waiting is rude , it implies that your time is more valuable than theirs. I still subconsciously value my time on my old hourly rate which was quite a lot and I’m obsessively punctual so I would have have removed your washing and put it in your bag and if I had wondered what you’d thought I would have expected you to be grateful I hadn’t piled it on the floor! I am also very particular about personal hygiene etc so you’d be quite safe.

Depends where you've been sticking them! 😜

No they were totally out of order.

Steady on there Carolyn ... has someone nicked your broomstick?

They were not out of order at all. What was out of order was leaving the machine full of washing that had finished . There by preventing others from using it. If you think that is acceptable then you are also rude.

I must start using emojis as no-one knows whether I’m serious or not unless they know me well but I am so concerned about my old headmistress, Miss Cumberlege turning in her grave that I haven’t been brave enough yet! Her full name was Desiree Fawcus Cumberlege so you can perhaps understand my fear of not using the Queen’s English.

I wouldn’t worry by the time it’s dried-dryer or naturally-any bugs will have departed, specially in a dryer!
And I assume it will also be ironed
The heat should kill any virus.
