Would help to know the make of the vehicle chassis ie, fiat, renault, ford etc which makes it easier to give some help on your problem.

It's a Fiat Ducato 2.8 JTD tag axel

Handbrake is poor and I can't pull lever up enough to get it to hold.

Cheers x

Recent thread on here about inefficient tag axle handbrakes, seems to be the nature of the beast. :(

It's probably just seized and needs a good service. Could be the cables or the in brake drums.

Common fault on tag axles seems to be low efficiency or imbalance on rear brakes
Not something your likely to be able to do yourself but it probably requires adjustment

20% efficiency could mean it's 80% seized!
I would be getting the MOT people to give it a service. My handbrake is perfect and you would be able to pull it on with ease. Its definitely faulty.

When I test drove my first van (Burstner Elegance 821) I noticed the hand brake was poor. Asked the dealer to correct it but it was still rubbish when I collected it. One of the first things I did was take it to a commercial garage for proper adjustment - the trick is getting the hand brake balanced across all 4 rear wheels. Had to do exactly the same thing with my next van (Hobby 750). Once it's properly adjusted it's fine.

Also, if your problem is to do with difficulty actually reaching the hand brake I believe you can get a hand brake extender that might make life easier.

2012 Burstner T660 for 3 years and love it. It's just the right size for us two to wild camp anywhere.

I find it really difficult to engage/disengage handbrake.

Its does sounds like the hand brake cables are seized - them and the pivots might just need lubing.

I have fitted one of these: Link Removed.

Makes it easier to operate the hand brake as the lever is much higher and of course it gives greater leverage.

Had a problem with my handbrake at last MOT, needed new cables and shoes.

So, not a tag axle arrangement then as the OP was enquiring about. In fact a completely different chassis and braking arrangement.

Tag axles are known to need to have their hand brakes adjusted properly and many garages that don't specialise in motorhomers often don't know what's required.

When buying my tag axle just a few weeks ago, practically every van I did a Mot history check on had advisories or failures for handbrake imbalance or poor efficiency.
The one I bought in the end it's the only think it's ever been advised on with an otherwise straight pass history from new

The burstner 747 I owned some 7 years ago was the same.... As you say it's a common think with the tags
