Hi guys I'm new to motorhome fun and it looks like a great site. could anyone help me with a handbrake problem on my Burstner Elegance on a fiat decato chassis.
When on the rolling mill during its mot, there is a loud bang when the handbrake it's applied. It passed the mot , but I would like to know what's causing the bang from the rear wheels. I've since done the usual , 're setting the shoes , and the brake cables which needed adjusting. has anyone else's had this problem

Took ours to the MOT Station a few months back. There were certainly a few bangs but mainly from their machinery. If it passed then there was nothing wrong. On ours he hit the brakes and we jumped in the air ( well it seemed like we did ) certainly shook my teeth.

I can actually reproduce the noise with a wheel jacked up, then with the wheel nut spanner try to turn the wheel with the handbrake on. there is just a slight movement then I can here the bang/thud.

Handbrake needs stripping and all moving parts and pivots need lubricating.
They're all moving, but not as freely as they should and will eventually seize.

perhaps I should have said that I have replaced the shoes and applied brake grease. As I see it the brake shoes, are doing what they should do, and they are tight against the drum, could it be that, once the handbrake is applied, the shoes are moving, with the drum fractionally, and jolting against the pivoted arm which the handbrake cable operates ?

Your correct in your assumption. But your shoes should not be adjusted tight against the drum (top hat system)! The bang you heard is normal, it’s the brakes locking the wheels. The handbrake when applied to a slow moving vehicle is quite fierce ?

One point on the Fiat handbrake is that it doesn't work nearly as effectively as it should unless you adjust it *exactly* as per Fiat's instructions. Mine wasn't done right and was still a problem even after stripping and rebuilding, until I got hold of the Fiat instructions and realised that the waste tank had to come off to get to a specific adjuster, something that the garage clearly hadn't bothered to do - did that, adjusted it all as per Fiat, and it was transformed.

It is an odd design of brake though, in particular the slight roll back that you get when parking uphill before the handbrake locks is a bit odd at first.

thanks guys, the info you have given me, has put my mind at rest, so i will live with the bang, At least I should only hear it once a year during its mot.?
