Did a couple of transactions in Belgium yesterday. Both transaction within 30seconds of each other

Halifax Clarity cc 1.156
Metro Bank dc 1.1689

Glad I only put 2k on the Halifax and the bulk on the Metro.

Looks like I'll be using my Metro account in future when traveling. That cost me £20 that's 1%.

Did you mean 1.1689 for the Metro Bank?

I use my Metro CC for most purchases but have back ups of Santander Zero and Nationwide CC neither of which charge. I use the Metro DC for cash withdrawals.

I have a new Clarity card not activated yet, I didnt know you could pre load it. Mine just seems to be a standard credit card, I would like to pre load it if I can.

Are there no charges for using that Metro Bank card abroad? Tesco and my personal bank charge like a Rhino when used abroad.

Curious as both are Mastercards, both claim to charge no fees nor commission and both claim to use the Mastercard wholesale rate...

I wonder if the difference is one was a credit card, one a debit card?

No - none. But limited to Europe

My current fave - Starling Bank, fee free worldwide.
The app is brilliant... when charging to my card in Australia, I was alerted to the amount even before the receipts had finished printing.

No pre-loading
You might get away with "over paying" once or twice

When I've overpaid on my Metro CC (forgotten I'd already set up a future payment and also a DD - it was the first month of DD) but I'd already used it again so just meant I didn't need to pay anything the following month.

Don't think you're supposed to pre-load any credit card.

I use Barclays visa
No charge for transactions or cash withdrawals abroad so no need to preload

Careful with Metro Bank, share price is tumbling

@Lenny HB @denisejoe

Its been mentioned on the market reports in the last couple of days, looking distinctly wobbly.
The bank might be wobbly as you put it - though I'm not convinced.
But in anycase, your money is safe [up to £85k]

If you're an investor, then fair comment.
Totally irrelevant if you're a customer or depositor.

Not totally irrelevant.

Can you imagine how long it would take HM Government to honour their commitment ?

I suspect they couldn’t if a few banks went down.

A few weeks IIRC when Iceland bank went bust.
...so I contend for a bit of holiday spending on your debit card it is irrelevant.

In any case - I'm sure I recommended "Starling Bank".

...nevertheless, I'd be much more relaxed about having a chunk of cash in a Metro account rather than in a solicitor's client deposit account... ;)

As long as you pay off your credit card each month no issue for most cards but just be mindful of the exchange rate on your transactions - have experienced both Barclaycard and Clarity - Clarity has given us by far the better rates.

I was surprised at how good the Metro bank rate was. I just transfer what I need at the time into my Metro bank account.

Rate was slightly better than Revolut and Halifax Clarity was slightly worse.

Doesn't make a lot of odds on holiday spending but when spending a few grand it does.

So now you know Metro Bank is "wobbly", will you be withdrawing your nest egg??

I will take your word for it Stephen...

Good point about solicitors client accounts. It’s a major worry if the banks go down.

The banks say it would be fine of course, but I don’t believe them.

One - Eggs - Basket - In - All...

always my mantra

I have probably got it wrong again but reading post 1 again it looked like Lenny HB had put £2000-00 on the card and was in credit. john.
Didn't out anything on it, just paid €2000 on Halifax credit card and paid another €6000 from my Metro bank account on debit card. Only used the Halifax card to compare rates.

This seems very strange as the highest inter bank spot rate yesterday the 10th May was €1.1601, Metro bank paying more than the inter bank rate, no wonder they are in trouble.

I lied it was Thursday not yesterday.:)
