Halfords have a selection of socket sets at half price, I was looking at the 90 piece to leave in the mh. Is the quality good?

Reasonable quality....but if you buy the professional range they have a lifetime no quibble gaurantee.

You break it, they replace it.

The only other place i know with that commitment to their tools is SNAP-ON....at 4 or 5 times the price.

Got a Halfords professional set for my fortieth to replace the Teng set I had for my twentieth, great set for the occasional user without the expense of snap on etc, as has been mentioned lifetime guarantee

My use these days is light and infrequent but i have a very large selection of spanners and sockets in a chest/cabinet, including a 1" drive socket set...only around 10 sockets but up to 4".....and some strange American sized spanners.

If i need one i dont have, broke or lost its down to Aldi when they are on weekly offers.
no hardship if they break as they are dirt cheap anyway.

Snap on all the way...but
Only in a pro setting. Way too expensive for DIY use.
I've spent 10's of 000's on them over the years, but that is for pro use. Never liked their diagnosis computers/tools, for us it's bosch or launch.
Teng is excellent range for semi-pro use.

John also Teng Tools at a fraction of the Snap On price and you only have to present the broken tool at the stockist for a replacement. Mac tools, Sealey professional also offer lifetime guarantee. The general reason people vary between tools is the range.

What happened to Whitworth and AF nuts and bolts they kept ships together when I was a lad none of the foreign muck then. King Dick spanners were all the rage, Sockets were for girls blouses, no need for guarantees they just lasted, engineered so that you stripped the threads or screwed the whole head off the bolt before the spanner broke. Lasted even longer than the ships they built.

I have a few snap-on specialist tools but never need them these days.

Snap-on timing light......the one with the adjustable retard/advance gauge.
Set timing at desired advance but read at TDC.
anologue multi meter...pretty accurate volt scale compared to my digi meters but what use a dwell gauge ?
Havent seen a set of points, or had to time them, for a long time.

Back in 1976 I worked in Zambia. We had a simple system.... you sign my requisition for a socket set and I'll sign yours. I still have it.

Halfords Pro spanners/tools are very good quality and like already said they come with a lifetime guarantee - just as good as snap on IMO of course

I have Snap On, Blue Point ( canadian version of Snap On ), Teng, Kamasa and Halfords stuff
As a pro user I would say Halfords is as good as anything else out there..

PJ, was looking for a set of seal pullers a couple of weeks ago.. Found them in the wrong draw but also found my dwell meter ! Handy for working on those crappy old fords that are becoming ever more popular as 'classic' cars !

Used to use a dwell meter on some of the military 8 cylinder RollsRoyce engines, with 2 sets of points in the one screened distributor.. Such fun !!!

Since 2011.
Still got my Whitworth spanners and sockets, even have some of them 'customised' for working on 180 and 240 Gardener engines,,,,, O'h the memories of being gassed on cold winters mornings by those engines. Fire on one, then two, three four and so on bwt, bwt, bang bang and then the Police streaking in to the yard asking us to start the trucks one at a time as the smoke would drift across a local roundabout and block drivers vision. The town would disappear for a while.
Anyway - Snap-on good but not the strongest spanners, jaws would open after some use, socket flank drives were a revolution and still have my 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 inch sets.
My most used Snap-on item,,,,, the ratchetting screwdriver still with original bits too.
Halfords pro allen keys - brilliant.

Regards,

Trikeman. :xwink:

Can't remember ;)
I bought 2 of the 120 piece pro sets for £60 each over xmas period -don't know if they are still on offer -should be £150 so half should be £75 - I promptly gave one away and the other is sitting ready to go into the garage :xgrin: where it will join all the Snap on and Blue point sockets and spanners that very rarely get used now.No idea why I still have the things or add to them -it's easier and better for me to phone my mate up and pay him to do mechanical jobs on the van -may use one or two when it gets warmer in the summer :xwink::xgrin:

I've still got my King Dick Spanners & sockets. They are still manufactured.
You still need whitworth for wood burning stoves. All the decent makes still use BSW.

There wasn't that many nuts and bolts on those ships were there, sailing ships didn't use them :D
