Stayed around in the garden for nearly an hour, didn’t mind the dogs wandering around but decided to go once I walked out.

I keep getting one in the garden after my gold fish. The pod looks interesting now with netting and bits of string with cd's hanging to try and frighten it.

Whenever I'm on my jollies I look out for a heron, once seen I feel welcome & safe.
Oh and of course I yell "HEY-ron!!!"

Have you or a neighbour got a pond?
Neighbor has a big pond full of koi, I have a small pond with goldfish, built over and covered most of the sides with netting, just after it left I took the dogs out and found a large goldfish in the driveway which is too the right on the pics, don’t think it was one of mine but I’ll be keeping a watch out.

We live right next to a stream which is overshadowed by trees and bushes but we still get herons dropping in, can't be an easy spot to land or take off but a regular spot for them. Their wingspan is 5 to 6 foot so must be agile flyers.

We did the Ship Canal Mersey Ferry trip and were astounded at the number of them on the canal.

Often get them sitting on our fence or in the field behind trying to work out how to get my koi, but they can’t 😀

Unlike the bloody Otter 🤬, but I think I’ve stopped him now as well.

I hope it was a non permanent for the Otter 😉 you can’t blame the Otter if you have brightly coloured food sat waiting for him🛍

Use to have 2 a day visit, purposely built my Koi pond above the ground, most of my Koi were over 60cm long but they will still have a go had 1 with puncture marks on it🤬

Also had a large natural pond that they use to try and get into every day.
My 2 Jack Russell’s were going mad one day so I ran outside only to see the Heron had got under the net then the Jacks had gone in the pond at it.

He visits at night and has emptied other ponds nearby, ive set up a system of linked pir floodlights, if any light sees movement they all come on, as do 4 x 105db alarms.

On the security cameras we’ve seen him bugger off pdq, and he’s only been back twice with the same result.

End of 2019 into early 2020 we had the same issue but that one cleared my pond, eventually it was found injured in the village and put down which was a shame, I guess someone didn’t understand wildlife.

Lights work best to keep them away, sorry to hear of the death. I haven’t seen one since Sept 2019 so I am getting serious withdrawal symptoms, can’t wait to get up North for good sightings and a chance to photograph them again.
