The acceptable tolerance over GVW in the UK is up to 5%. Does anyone know if there is a similar acceptable percentage across the EU?

Obviously asking for a friend!!

Thanks,

I think you are likely to find it depends on where and who stops you and how they are feeling at the time.
Don’t think there is even a legally accepted 5% in the uk other than on manufacturers stated kerb weight / unladen weight.

I doubt if there would be any leeway in an accident if you were overladen

I think you're all correct. I get under weight with half a tank of diesel in half fill of water. That's the solution then unless a pile on the weight eating gateau on route!

I doubt the authorities go and weigh the crashed vehicles, I was involved in an 8 car pile up on the motorway at 7:20 AM, shut the motorway for 2 hours and they did not even breathalyse anyone !!

There will be 27 answers to that question.
Indeed there will. It's a topic almost as popular as those on toilets. There 40 'opinions' in this thread alone......

Emmit has it about right.......

Ask yourself,
"Do you feel lucky?"
"Well, do you?"

No idea re the 5%
Austria is keen on weighing motor homes.
Over 3.5 you need a go box for motorways etc

Being over in UK may mean a fine or visit to court all done at a later date.
Abroad it's on the spot so be ready with the Euro's, plus dump any additional weight before moving.
We met a couple we knew (ex MCC) on a campsite in Spain, they had been stopped in France, 90 euro fine and they had to leave some items at the side of a bin. Books mainly to get the weight down to be allowed to travel on.

Not sure if any exemptions abroad!

The ‘acceptable’ tolerance within UK is usually with regard to freight vehicles rather than domestic. It also does not mean that a vehicle, such as a motorhome, would be allowed to continue its journey without the excess weight being removed, even if within that 5% figure etc

As Emmit says….

I was informed by the TCS (Swiss AA boys) that 5% was perfectly OK as the weigh bridges are only calibrated to +/- 5% and most are used for much heavier vehicles and are calibrated to that end of the scale.

Now that could of just been a load of bollox but i trusted his authenticity 😂 (he had a beard)

The tolerance of 5% in uk is based on weighbridge variance, wind loading ,and spring tension in the old style machinery, also unlevel surface. I do not have any information on continental enforcement agencies so I always keep underweight. However I do wonder about continental vans

Given that weighbridges can be 5% out you could end up being 10% over if you weighed in at the maximum.

I suspect the point you make is the reason why a tolerance is accepted, else everyone who is slightly over weight would demand to see a test report for the weighbridge. I'm now under weight but have had to put the bikes inside and get rid of the rack to achieve it.
