I've just bought a really good chain lock to secure my 2 bikes to the rear mounted cycle carrier.
But I accept that it is not too hard for a scrote to cut through the carrier tubing or maybe unbolt the carrier itself (usual Fiama type)

This started me thinking about installing an eye bolt or ground anchor type fixing directly bolted through the rear part of the motorhome

The chain lock is long enough to go around this and 2 bikes (1.4m long)

Has anybody fitted one and if so which would you recommend ?

TIA

Check your bikes are insured whilst attached to the vehicle as some policies insist they are secured to an immovable object.

A good thought. I have a nudge bar, I will see if the chain is long enough.
My old one had a rear nudge/tow bar which was handy to chain the bikes to (y)

I bolted the rack to the van door and used the fixing things that were bolted to the van floor when I bought it.

Thinking out load really.
Not as safe as round the nudge bar but now investigating security bolts where the carrier clevis bolts are.

But could these not be simply unscrewed ?
The bolts and plates on the inside of the door are doctored a bit so they will not come off.
I fitted them mainly to hold the straps which keeps the bikes in place and also the cover.

There must be a towing eye on the front of your van or an eye Bolt that screws in..BUSBY.

Didn't have the MH with me when I wrote earlier.
Got it now.
Fiama have rivetted the frame to the 'wall' mounts so now feeling less vulnerable.
I thought they were bolted on.
Sorry for any confusion caused.

If the scrotes want your bikes it will take 30 seconds with a battery powered angle grinder to cut through the bike rack and have the whole lot in the back of a transit

Those are coach bolts & there'll be nuts on the inside. Equally secure though.

Yes I know but if I have taken reasonable precautions it displaces the crime elsewhere.
Exactly like your house.

It is up to the individual as to what is "reasonable" and that will be a balancing act between the cost of security measures and the likely cost of the loss if the worse happens. If you just have run of the mill bikes then I would agree with you that what you have done is reasonable. But some people on here often carry very expensive bikes, either because they are specialist mountain or road bikes of because they are the more expensive electric bikes. In those cases a couple of bikes may represent an outlay of £5,000 or more, which is a very tasty target for the scrotes. That is when the balance becomes more difficult, and, in those circumstances, I would not want to just rely upon the rack being bolted down.

As it happens we bought a moho with a garage so we had nothing attached to the outside of the motorhome and on display. That I suspect is the best security measure. As it happens we have a scooter in that garage, so no bikes. We bought the Vanbitz Growler alarm and non-starter which has all doors alarmed and we get a message on our phones if the alarm is set off. It also has a bike loop which you can use for bikes on the rear of the motorhome. We only use it when we leave the scooter out on an Aire or campsite.

yes. plus the chain you refer to may not comply with insurers conditions of claim

I think while ever you have the bike on the back it is at risk no matter what you do. All you can achieve is make it a little bit more time consuming.

However, I would still recommend something solidly bolted to the chassis or or other permanent part the motorhome to prevent them doing things like this.

PS: I would suggest 2 things that may help.
1) A loop from your alarm system which when cut would set off the alarm.
2) A camera pointing down at the bikes and a vinyl sticker that the thieves will see pointing out the camera.

Neither will put off some of them, but...

My Spring project is a securing mechanism and a 12v LED security light on a sensor for inside the trailer where the bikes are. Currently i just chain the 5-6 bikes together.
