Hi, we will be travelling through Austria, from Germany, to Slovenia and I keep reading about how beautiful the Grossglockner pass/road is. I have looked it up and understand that you have to pay to go on it. What I don't understand is, can we use it as part of the route through Austria? or is it a road that you start and finish at the same point. Sorry to sound so thick! I've tried Google maps but don't understand what it is telling me.

Yes - it's a through route from Zell am Zee to Lienz. Fantastic road - easy by motorhome and even better on a motorbike! Well worth the toll charge (something like 28 to 35 euros). Good campsite at Heiligenblut which is worth a stop just to see the classic alps church. Virtually no parking in the centre of the village but I think if you turn right (from the north) off the 107 and take the road down to the campsite you may be able to park somewhere along the way and at worsy, walk back up to the village.

We went up one side in fog and snow showers in August a number of years ago
Great views and warm sunshine at the top and down the other side.
Loads of tour busses doing it each day

If you happen to still be on it as it starting to get dark take the time to stop near the glaciers if you can and get your camera out ... you might be lucky and see the ibex ... we did.

We went over Grossglockner in the van last June - fantastic! Try and pick a day with fine weather so you can make the most of the stunning scenery and panoramic views. There was still plenty of snow by the roadside at altitude, but the road was dry and clear.

Make sure you have your camera (or phone) handy - lots of brilliant photo opportunities. Oh and plenty of places to pull up en route to admire the scenery.

And, as already been mentioned, you can use it as a 'through route', which is what we did.

Interestingly, there was a Tesla parked near the top that we'd watched being TOWED up there by a large 4x4!
