Burstner
Hi
I’m thinking of getting a Burstner it 664 but I’ve noticed some are 3500kg but the one I have in mind is 4000kg I’ve heard that it is possible to downgrade is this true?. We want the weight to be 3500kg so the kids can also use the motorhome.

Regards Adam

I'm not familiar with the motorhome but I suspect it's quite a long one and trying to get it below 3500kg and still be usable, ie with enough payload for passengers and kit, clothes, food etc will likely be impossible. Do you have a link to it?

I think most folks experience of intended kids’ use is that it never materialises. 🤷‍♂️

I think you will struggle with that however you could consider getting a trailer for the payload
Is it not 3.5tonne including the trailer for post '97 total licenses?

Category B - if you passed your test before 1 January 1997

You’re usually allowed to drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8,250kg maximum authorised mass (MAM). View your driving licence information to check.

You’re also allowed to drive a minibus with a trailer over 750kg MAM.

Category B - if you passed your test on or after 1 January 1997

You can drive vehicles up to 3,500kg MAM with up to 8 passenger seats (with a trailer up to 750kg).

You can also tow heavier trailers if the total MAM of the vehicle and trailer is not more than 3,500kg.

You can drive motor tricycles with a power output higher than 15kW if you are over 21 years old.

Physically disabled drivers with provisional category B entitlement will also have provisional entitlement to ride category A1 or A motor tricycles.

Non-disabled drivers can no longer ride motor tricycles with a provisional category B licence.

You may find that it weighs 3500 kgs or more when empty 🤔 A weighbridge should be your starting point just in case.

Sorry no link

The spec I found gave a payload of 460 kg when rated at 3500kg. So you would have that figure (460) to play with for passengers, food, clothes and everything else you need to carry. Also if previous owners have added any extras like batteries, tow bar etc then that needs to be deducted.
I would ask the seller to take it on a weighbridge prior to any deal and find it's true empty weight. You would need that weigh ticket anyway to downplate.

In theory you can do it yourself but dvla now ask for an Engineers report to support the application.

Dee at Van weight engineering, excellent service and a fair price.

When selling my last van I did it myself, then you just put the new weight on the V5 for the new owners. If it legal at 4t then no alterations needed to make it legal at 3.5

Really? Do you have a linky?

What link are you referring too please?

I applied myself by completing the changes on the v5 and put a covering note plus the forms for the revenue change and the funds for the difference in revenue costs.

I was then asked by dvla for technical evidence to support the application.
I then used Van Weight Engineering who supplied a technical report supported by his qualifications and signature.
All was returned to DVLA and after that it was all back within including new v5 within 4 weeks.

You've quoted the answer in your post, viz

"You can drive vehicles up to 3,500kg MAM with up to 8 passenger seats (with a trailer up to 750kg)."

It's 6.74m long so might just be able to run at 3500 but it will be very tight.
tonka found the payload at 3500 kg was only 460 kg, with a German van you really need 650 to 700 kg a lot of things that are standard on Brit vans are extras on German vans. The payload is always given on the basic van and you can't even buy them in that spec.
