Hi Folks, I was in Greece in 1999 and the only wine available was Retsina....I did not like it AT ALL:cry: I loved the Ouzo though:D what's the wine in Greece like these days? If Retsina is the only wine available I guess we shall have to take wine from Italy? We're off to Greece for the month of May:D

They serve Amstel beer there.

I vote for the large bottle served very chilled.

Sometimes for a change we get this Greek Kourtaki red wine from Sainsbury’s...

https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/shop/gb/groceries/kourtaki-mavrodaphne-of-patras-sweet-red-75cl

It’s almost like a cross between red wine and a port, 15% alcohol, not too shabby for the money.

Before Oddbins folded here some years ago, they had some really nice Greek wines, but don’t recall names now.
Thats just the one I was going to suggest when someone recommended it to me I thought sweet Greek red wine!!!!!!!!!! but its lovely

Lots of good Greek wine around these days - our favourite is Assyrtiko from Santorini - it's a type (called after the grape), not a label.

ILove ice cold retsina, nothing better than watching sunsets and a large glass? Red is good too.

Wait for the reaction.......
I actually quite liked a couple of variations of retsina, one used to be available in the Dodecanese islands in crown cork beer type bottles with a golden olive leaf motif on the label, great cold with grilled Greek food!

I can really only advise you on white wine, and there are some really horrible ones. The best ones I have tasted have been Amethystos Fume, Fantaxometocha and Gero Vassilis (may have spelt them slightly incorrectly but this is how they're pronounced), however these really cost! Diluting the local white wine with soda usually makes it palatable. You're often better with the house rose. I hate Retsina too.

I recall Retsina & Domestica, the latter had a taste too close to a similar naming household cleaning agent for my liking.

Greece has thousands of wines these days some are excellent some are real rough , there are some drinkable reds and whites in 1.5 litre bottles for under 6 euros Apellia is a common brand . Look out for non big brand name beers Berlin . Royal dutch , pils hellas , to name a few all around 90 cents for 500 ml can . One can get messed up real cheap down here but drinking in bars in touristy islands can be a bit pricey . Happy boozing !
