If you pay a fee and go to a passport office in the morning you can collect the new passport after 1600. Not sure if they do that during lockdown. I did it in Victoria a few years back.

Renewed mine over the Christmas period and was very pleased with how quickly the new one arrived.
All set now for a 12month tour around Europe.

Ever since lighting was by Calor gas.
A big šŸ‘ to the DVLA as well. I posted the form to renew my driving licence the week before Christmas and it arrived back first week in January. I consider that to be excellent service.
I'm over 70 so have to renew every 3 years. I renewed mine last Friday online which took about ten minutes max.
I've also found the DVLA online VED renew and SORN service excellent.

The passport office is always good & quick they could give DVLA some lessons.

I doubt they could teach them much, the volume of passport issuing is very small compared to VED, Sorn, vehicle changes, licenses, etc that DVLA deal with
