Plenty of vineyards you can stay on without joining France passion just stop at a local tourist office and ask

It sounds an ideal way of spending a few weeks in a lovely part of France, very romantic!
I don’t think it possible tho, the Vinyards cant rely on odd people who know nothing about the vines turning up at the right time to get the harvest in!
Nice dream!

Our friends spent a day pruning in a vineyard this year they pitched there overnight and got talking at the tasting in the evening then offered to help out for a day I think they got fed and a couple of bottles free.

Stayed on 3 French vineyards, the one at Blaye, which was free with ehu water etc, one where we were given a bottle of wine as we pitched up on a free vineyard aire with free ehu etc. , and one which was also free but we bought a few bottles, but still a cheap stopover. (y)

Some collectives organise a grape-picking week-end within a village, la Puy Notre Dame, near to Saumur is one which springs to mind (have been there a few times) and information can be obtained from the Tourist Information Office in the village. I cannot now remember the cost for the week-end.

The usual format is to arrive on the Friday and have an explanation of the grape handling process in the early evening, with samples of the juice as it starts its journey. The Saturday morning is then devoted to picking the grapes, don't forget your secateurs, with a stop mid morning for refreshments, in our case we had on offer cold meats, cheeses, bread, madeleines, wine, beer, coffee. Then stop for lunch, often taken in the vigneron's wine-tasting room, lasting a couple of hours or more. A well-needed siesta then follows before another meal in the evening. On Sunday morning, there is often a "ramble" organised leading to, perhaps, a barbecue.

Of course, it does help if participants have at least a smattering of the local language. I have often seen a copy of "The Pocket English / French Dictionary" being brought out during the mealtimes to help out.

IHTH

Spent two weeks grape picking in October - in Cambridgeshire! It was great fun and we will certainly go back again next year.

We used to do grape picking and bottling etc at Biddenden Vineyards in Kent ... enjoyable in fine weather :sun:
... not so with the rain pouring down your neck.?

I certainly couldn't do it now as it's very hard on the back so just stick to :wine:

I was invited to join in the vendange on a small local non-commercial vineyard, mostly family members doing the picking. I can confirm it is hard on the back but what finished me off was the bites from the insects that shelter amongst the leaves.

Once was enough for me!

Just do not look at it as fun...
