We are at Gordes now and planning our route East. Could anyone offer any advice please as to which way to tour the Gorge. We are thinking South side via the D71.

Any thoughts and advice regarding the drive, Aires etc would be much appreciated (note we like the FLT way of touring ;))

Cheers

Grahame

I would go on the south side because if you are on the north side you will be looking directly into the low sun, so seeing and photographing the gorge will be difficult. See image below, shot in October from the south side. :)

not long enough
the spectacular heights and views are from the north side of the gorge, we were there in February and drove right round, generally finding the south side more boring than we recalled, although there is a spectacular hotel restaurant with balcony rooms overlooking the gorge quite literally

the D23 is the road to drive for the best heights and views if that is your thing

there is a weight limit on it, but the road is now one way (clockwise as above) and easily doable in our 8m 5t MH, plenty of free stopping overnight options at this time of year as it will be really quiet

We also free camped here in car park at Auberge du point Sublime where we saw wild goats and loads of Grifffon vultures

Castelanne has a town centre aire that the barrier was open in Feb so free, but not much even if they are charging, the walk to the church on top of the hill is a must do, well that is what we thought from the bottom anyway :)

spectacular part of France, one of our favourites

South side is better if you can handle the view of the drop. Moustiers is worthy of an overnight or if you have FP and they are open then about 3/4 kms north of st Croix there is a cracking lavender place.
Up the top on the south side is a place called le styx Broken Link Removed which is worthy of a trundle down in the gorges. Don't know whether I think the start of November is a good time or a bad time to do it though
