Does Google maps have speed camera warnings - if so does it need to be online?

And does anyone know has much data is used per hour?

Data use is likely to be governed by the settings that you use, the more detailed the map the more data. Most phones have a data monitor built in somewhere so you could make a note, try it for 10 mins and extrapolate.

It will still be very illegal in most EU countries though 😉

Google Maps allows you to download areas for use offline. This means you can view the map without a data connection and it does reduce your data use on the move. However, if you want to plan a route somewhere, it needs to be able to talk to the Google mothership. Once you've planned a route, it (normally?) gives you the option to pre-download it just in case you have a spotty (or no) connection. I'm pretty sure that it loses this pre-plan the moment you plan another route or quit the app though.

While you're driving, if a connection is available, Google Maps uses data the whole time to give you congestion information and updates your ETA based on current conditions (and feeds traffic conditions you've experienced back to Google). The data rate isn't huge, about 5MB per hour, which is far less than streaming even a few minutes of video, but it isn't zero.

I'm not sure where the speed camera data comes from. It might be user reported (from Waze users) or it might use authority databases, I'm not sure. It's reasonably reliable, but not perfect. I don't know if the camera alerts work all the time, or only when you're following a route???
