Tour Guide Wanted Good campsites North Devon (1 Viewer)

We are planning a long stay around North Devon area for a few weeks from the end of December. In the past Spain has been our destination but not prepared to chance it again yet.
Looking for a quiet site in nice location. We haven't been round this area of the UK before.
Any advice much appreciated.

Do you want much in the way of facilities?

We used stowfords for many years but quite commercialised as they go.

In winter I expect its quite quiet.

Welcombe has a little campsite on the A39 and a lovely walk / drive down to welcombe bay - be warned it's narrow.

Also there are several off road wild camping sites in particular one just after the bend at Hartland which is a designated motorhome site.

Hartland quay + clovelley are lovely too I'm sure there are campsites near by too.

Loads of small CS bug you would need a car or done transport to get around of van fairly big

We used to stay at Hidden Valley when it was under the first owners and were regulars there. It was then sold and the prices rose dramatically and the meals served in the restaurant were not up to the previous high standards. This was several years ago and hopefully it will have improved since then. Anyway, the campsite is easy to find on the road between Braunton and Ilfracombe and is a good base to explore the delights of the North Devon coastline and its hinterlands. I'm biased as it's one of my favourite areas in the UK with Woolacombe and its beach in particular. Hidden Valley is on the main road so it can be a bit noisy if you have a pitch next to the road but not too bad otherwise. If you are in for cycling, the Tarka Trail starts in Braunton and follows the old railway line to Barnstaple and on to Bideford alongside the river; easy cycling and lovely scenery.

You may find that many will have closed for the season by December!

The Hidden Valley, near Ilfracombe has been mentioned, it is the one of few, maybe only open all the year round!

I stay there a lot and it is welll recommended.

Easy access, close to Braunton, Croyde, Ilfracombe, Woolacombe and Barnstaple.

Very helpful people.

Cheapest fuel is at Asda, Barnstaple.

LPG on tap at Roundswell Petrol Station, Barnstaple.

The on-site restaurant is acceptable.

Toilet block is alwaysclean.

Grey water dump on the lower pathway, stop and open tap.

Plenty of blackwater dumps.

Hardcore, level pitches with water and EHU.

Excellent fish and chip shop in Braunton and a Tesco.

Bus stops at the site entrance.

One small site that I've driven past many times but never stayed is;

Riverside Camping & Self Catering Lodges in North Devon, Lynton and Lynmouth at Sunny Lyn Holiday Park.

Sunny Lyn is located in Exmoor National Park next to the West Lyn River and within a short walk of both Lynton and Lynmouth Town Centres. The site offers a variety of accommodation options from Riverside lodges, apartments, static caravans, touring caravans/motorhomes pitches and camping. We...

A location that would suit me. It always looks clean and tidy.

Another that I have stayed at is Doone Valley Campsite, Malmesmead.

Lots of outdoor stuff to do based in a lovely, flat, grass site. Free WiFi, Clean toilet block, EHU available, fresh water tap, never had need of Grey or Black waste dump.

Approached from the A39 a turning for Oare with a brown sign for the campsite. It is a steep windy hill descent but not troubling either up or down as long as you take it slow! Once down in the valley turn right for Malmesmead, again slow, narrow and windy, but not a problem in my 7.5mtr.

Until you reach Malmesmead! I don't think my van would fit across the bridge so I use the ford, next to the bridge, easy peasy.

A little further and the campsite is through the carpark. There is/was a combination lock on the gate which you are given when you book. I have just rolled up and phoned the lady from the gate - lol.

Some of the EHU posts need an extention lead that the lady has provided in the past.

Not much in Malmesmead, there was a eating place but it was closed for refurbishment during my last visit.

There are pubs/restaurants in the next westbound village Brendon but I've never driven the van along the road, only by car and bike. I don't think I could get my van across the bridge at Brendon to leave the valley. The same along the valley eastbound, there is another narrow bidge.

The site is excellent as a base for doing nothing, walking and cycling.

Exmoor is quieter and nicer than woolacombe / iffracombe Area which if you don't need really busy beaches is a better bet.

Hi mate. We are finishing off with 1 night at a very wet Strathclyde Park. We've had 3 glorious weeks touring with only 2 days rain.
Thanks about Devon. We are having second thoughts about the UK, to much hassle finding and booking, so may head back to Spsin. Hope you're well.

Just come in the front door of the house after having been out checking on the motorhome and filling it with diesel for later this week.

Guess where it is? Yip, correct, Strathclyde Country Park. How could I miss out on a cup of tea!

Under half mile off A39,
Just amazing sunsets over Bideford bay towards Lundy Island,
half mile onto the Southwest coast path.
minutes from Westward Ho! beach/Bideford/Appledore
Bude 20miles south and lot in between..
Enjoy if you come to sunny North Devon

Damage Barton near MORTHOE, lovely site, good facilities, great for walking, bus stop outside gate, shop on site, cracking view across Bristol Channel. We stayed there in October.

A lovely family run site. Clean, tidy and quite except near the children's play area. Designated dog walking area. Hadcore pitches with EHU, water and grey waste drain.

Big point, it is open all year.
