We took advantage of our extended warranty and asked the dealer to fix our faulty sliding door “soft closure”
I was somewhat vindicated/pleased that the technician could not find an in-line or other fuse for the device. However he did find the problem and demonstrated the solution.
Directly underneath the black switch on the doorjamb is a sensor, a magnet I think. At the lock end of the door on the inside is a corresponding magnet. On closing the door these line up and so initiate the mechanism. He said that these become dirty, thus preventing the closure operating. Ours was completely missing, a rusty mark where it should be. He taped a coin magnet to the door and alleluia it worked.
My wife had lost confidence in the soft closure so we had it removed and replaced with the original catch.
Thank you to all who read my original query and offered advice.
