Just been getting some metal powder coated for the spare wheel carrier. At the place was a full set of wheels which they had just powder coated. I asked their price for doing wheels and the answer was £65 per wheel which is shot blasted, primered and finished, any colour.

I had looked at getting alloys, but there was no weight advantage to do so and the insurance may have gone up. I am not keen on the plastic wheel trims so a snazzy paint job might be OK.

Anybody had this done ? Any problems regarding air leaks later ? And does that seem a decent price ?

No, that's just the bare rims.

Someone in Cornwall had this done on an old Hymer and they look really smart. He did them two at a time and had to remove the tyres himself. If I recall correctly they cost him £50 per wheel. It is a bonus if you have the work done when you need replacement tyres.

I'm not a fan of powder coating on vehicles. It is harder than normal paint so if a stone hits it, it tends to crack and moisture gets under it an it then starts flaking off. Most tow bars are powder coated just look at the state of them when they have been on a vehicle for more than a couple of years.

I had our wheels done in Stockton, they would take tyres off if required but I had them removed myself, they were still around £50 per wheel for the coating, I had new metal valves at the same time and they are now properly airtight which at least one was not before.

Don't have them done anywhere that offers to do them with the tyres still on.
Heat is not good for the tyres and you end up with an edge where moisture can get under the coating

My business neighbour specialises in alloy wheels refurbs, set of four chemical strip, grit blast, primed and powder coated in the colour of your choice for around £250 including removal, refitting and balancing tyres. They also do steel wheels. They have done several sets for me now including two sets of alloys for my race car, a set of alloys for the wife's car, set of alloys for our 2014 daily driver Mazda 2 and a set of steels for our camper. They can also straighten (re-round?) bent rims and weld repair cracks. If the base material is properly primed stone chips don't cause rust. I also had the front subframe and wishbone done for the racecar.

I had six of mine done for £340 tyres off and rebalanced

When you say you were looking to get alloys but there was no weight advantage .I have a spare steel wheel for my van and the weight difference is quite significant compared to the alloys

I looked up the weight specs for both the Ford Transit steel wheel and the Ford Alloy wheels and there was little weight difference, certainly not enough to convince me to lay out cold hard cash. The Alloys have to be quite meaty to support the loaded weight of a MH.
