I wont worry about the lack of charging points in Spain, Portugal etc the Uk will happily pay for their installation after all we are a rich country.

Anyone know what a typical Diesel engine weighs?
Compared to a Tesla battery pack

The 85 kWh battery pack weighs 1,200 lb (540 kg) and contains 7,104 lithium-ion battery cells in 16 modules wired in series (14 in the flat section and two stacked on the front).

About 300lbs for a 4cyl 2.3 plus gearbox

But at that weight difference how will any manufacturer do a 3500kg my with any payload?

They simply cannot using todays build methods --difference must be close to half a ton IE batteries v engine g box -very few makers have much more than half a ton pay load now, so that will be taken up by the extra weight of the batteries

I guess if they stand a chance they should be looking at developing in the over 3500kg class built on the IVECO daily chassis as a lot of these have 2000kg payload.

Then they would be looking at a dwindling market of fewer C1 Licence-holders, even if they threw in a free driving course to tempt a few.

I doubt whether the development and production costs would stack up with the bean-counters.

So too heavy for sun 3500kg and not commercially viable over 3500kg "its doomed, doomed I tell you"

There is an electric IVECO daily with 80kw and a claimed real world range of 200km, don't know what the additional weight is though.

Just a thought, not only do you not need a engine and gearbox ....you would not have use for a tank and fuel so some more weio saving. No doubt there would be other savings to be made

Iveco asked the EU about increasing the weight limit to 4200kg for electric vehicles on a B license to make it more viable. Of course they wouldn't.

According to what can be found via Google, the UK govt was asked about this, had a consultation, and agreed to implement it. They have obtained a 5 year derogation from the EU and increased the max GVW for large electric vans to 4250 kg. There are some conditions and restrictions.

I am trying to think how a EU Derogation fits with the various Member States obligations under the International Conventions on Vehicles and Drivers Licences(Vienna, Geneva, Paris) which include about 126 countries, of which some are in Europe but not in EU, Norway for example.

So yet again EV's get an unfair advantage... with cars is subsidies, and now with Vans its weight.

Ours got about 8-9 miles and would need pushing up the slope to the dairy to offload the empties before going for a days charging for next day.
