This thread is designed for people who have, or are, or will be going to Germany/Austria as an alternative to France/Spain in the months of August/September. (or longer)

People interested in the thread should ensure their own travel insurance is in order, motorhome insurance, pet insurance and tv warranty are in order then anyone who wishes to participate shouldnt have a need to denegrade the thread with "You shouldnt be going, what happens if you catch it ? etc" You will have already made that decision, or it may or may not help you make that decision.

The idea is that, from information from other threads, many people are considering Germany/Austria and the situation is fluid. So advice as to where to go, what to do, where the good aires are, local info, possible meets, CV rates, local federal states anomalies, country transiting, UK Quarantine rumours/facts can be shared amongst those of us who are definitely maybe going.

Personally I am currently 75 per cent going to Austria then Germany on 28th August via tunnel for 28 days.

No need to update where you are if you dont want to. As when or if I am away, I will and I will try to update figures for CV so a best educated guess can be made for you to make your individual decision as to whether you feel the necessity to run to Calais like the wind. Others may update figures as well. It will hopefully be updated by all in Germany and I dont own the thread !

So hopefully this will be a nice place to post, without arguments about the life choices you have made for your own life that you dont have to live for somebody else.

To start with. I went over on 15th June ignoring the FCO advice and went to France. After 10 days of not bumping into anyone we decided Germany would be a place to go and went to Emmendingham (it has a lidls and a supermarket), a small town outside of Freiberg about 10-12 kms away. Big aire which used to be free. Maybe 30 van spaces. It now has a paying machine via card or cash. In June they were accepting cash so we didnt pay. Polizei came round about 0800 hrs to collect the money. There were only 5 of us there. Nobody paid. They looked at us and went away. But this was CV time and they probably didnt want to interact so I would suggest paying now. We went into the town and immediately noticed how much traffic there was. Germany was normal and we werent used to it. The market car park was jammed and the town heaving. We went into a big shop and everyone, EVERYONE was wearing masks. Rules in Germany are not French. They are to be obeyed. It was not what we were used to and basically we didnt like it as it was far too normal to what we had been used to for 4 months. We returned to rural France.

I couldnt come home on 6th July so returned to the Moselle and stayed at Reil for 5 days. Reil has its own thread started by Snowbird Dave who is in the 5th Wheeler, first van on the right as you enter. It was 8 euros without leccy and 10 with i think. Rock hard grass. No wifi while I was there however Dave was in parlez with Madam Mayor to sort things out. Mainly Germans and many went locally going by their reg numbers. You can get right up the moselle here and it is a pretty town with views from the aire over the river to steep vineyards. Very obviously an electric cycle heaven area. Zell was just up the road and peope cycled to the Globus at Zell as quickly as we got there on the motorbike which was weird. Cycle path goes alongside the aire/stellplatz (they are stellplatzes) I didnt find out til we were leaving but people do swim in the moselle here. There is hardly any current. But i really wouldnt argue with the big boats which at the time we were there were very infrequent but increasing. The Globus is a great shop. Bratwurst cooked in a bun for 92 cents. While i am on prices, Diesel was about 1.02 but have heard it is possible to find it 1.00 euros. A man comes round and you pay cash but its kind of weird that there are 2 of them and they wont collect money for the other blokes days. Dave will explain it better
50.026666, 7.114320

In the course of time I will add some of the other stellplatzes which we found to be decent on previous visits.

Fill your boots, join in and share and if in Germany/Austria at the moment, give us all an update to help with our decision making.

Cheers

Can’t travel until 4 th sept due to work but need some sun so looking at south of France, cv numbers in France mainly confined to Paris, all new arrivals at Paris airports that have a temp etc.are registered to Paris.....
Looking at uk v France graph for new infections they seem to be on the same trajectory so same difference home or away but added sunshine?
Germany seems a bit behind but by September anyone’s guess, thanks never thought of Austria we always head south in France but seems a good option, cheap tunnel crossings possibly? But then I do need to stock up on wine...

Van conversion
In Germany at the moment after Italy and briefly Switzerland. Stayed at aire in Breisach, got place on Rhine side. Aire though big is fine, €6 a day and an easyvwalkbinto town. Don't park near tree with hornet nest! What we didn't like were the motorboats with seemingly trainee water-skiers that went constantly along the short stretch of the Rhine beside the aire. Very intrusive.
We stayed at Gengenbach. There are two aires, one privately owned by a winery/distllery. Wine-tasting was a good experience and if you spend over €40 the aire is free. But we would not stay there again as the noise at night from partygoers and people staying on the aire who seemingly had invited friends in cars to join them, was too much for us. We move into a nearby layby which was further from the noise but we seemed to have noisy groups in the vicinity and close to us until well after 02.00.
Also stayed at a super campsite at Oberhausen an der Nahe. Very quiet, friendly, clean and super hot water.
Great that suavecarve has started this thread, and very useful.

Where to get info on Austrian/German aires?
I use searchforsites on internet
Problem is they dont have the amount of reviews in Germany as they do in France.
There is a very good european aires book in German but FiL has it in his van and he is currently at Sully. Books go out of date quickly
There will be others recommending campercontact and park4night also and they are equally as good as each other imv. S4S is free if you have data. You can buy each app for about a fiver which is well worth it as you will use that in diesel trying to find your first aire without one of them

I believe the trick with Austria is to go over the Alps so youre on the Southern side if youre after sun. No aires to speak of but Acsi card comes in useful and it is truly stunning. We went to Millstat. Big swimming lake and if you go on a campsite you get the millstat card which allows you on their beaches, boat rides museums etc

fab thread we will watch with interest. Mosele river we did 2 years ago and it was great.
I have heard that the black forest is good but may be slightly overrun with German staycationers.
I could be wrong ?

I ll add some Black Forest stuff in due course. Think i ve stayed about 20 places in Germany from Berchtesgaarden to Koblenz generally.
I think i like the stellplatzes better than the aires even though they charge more often. They are just looked after better in general.
Some amazingly beautiful lakes.
Also done half the romantic road and most of the alpinestrabbe. Glossglockner has been done and that is amazing.
I ve got night shifts to work in a couple of days so will whack up a bit then

We’re booked from Hull to Rotterdam on the 4th and planned heading to Lake Constance area. I know a few have said we don’t need to quarantine if transiting through a country and on to Tunnel but does anyone know the rules regarding travelling via Ferry as we’ll have to get out of MH.

This is a good source for Stellplatze https://stellplatz.info/reisemobilstellplatz/deutschland
On Moselle Enkirch good stell platze , Dont use Sankt Aldegund , very noisy , Klusserath massive stellplatze , with facilities , plenty of ehu , and space . Soest City Motel stp is small but good facilities inc showers and toilets and not dear right in town . I have stayed at quite a few in Germany but its sorting out in head as not very organised and documented :)

Technically the people who are saying you socialise before you are in the UK are correct (imv) However, I suspect that HMG will ignore this viewpoint and "consider" you "home" once on the ferry.

It would be nice of them to say so to put peoples mind at rest.

It is only my viewpoint and not a fact I am afraid to say and i havent seen anything to confirm either way

My understanding of the rules for CV.

Hopefully someone like orridge will come along and correct me as I am certainly no expert on Germany however.

Germany has 16 different Federal states and Frau Merkel gives them the autonomy to make up their own rules for CV. So it is relatively important to know which FS you are in. So keep an eye on where you are FS wise.

Here is the German News channel i monitor and they have a Q and A for the information we seek which is where the link will take you to directly. Just hit the home button within that to get the news and might be worth bookmarking.

I did find this which depending how you read it I think I’d have to quarantine

You’ll still need to self-isolate if you’ve visited or made a ‘transit stop’ in the previous 14 days in any country that is not on the list. A ‘transit stop’ is a stop where passengers can get on or off a coach, ferry, train or plane. Your ticket should say if a stop is a transit stop.

The 14 days begin from the date you left that country.

What you need is a motorhomfun member who lives in the constituency of welwyn hatfield to ask his or her MP this exact question.

The MP for said constituency is Mr Schapps the transport secretary.

It is also so long time since i used a ferry but dont you have to leave Holland to board the ferry and then the socialising takes place before you get into the UK so you havent socialised in Holland ?

Is this the important bit ? are you in a country ? in the previous 14 days in any country

We were due to spend a few well planned out months in France but that’s now a Covid no go. Our tunnel crossing is next week so I’m thinking about quickly transiting through France non stop to Germany but planning time is short.

Ive done the Moselle and some of the Rhine already so looking for some new German experience / ideas / thoughts .
Our interests are really centered around keeping clear of cities , walking , history and good leccy biking paths.
We intend to be in Germany until late Nov fingers crossed !

Thanks in advance

I too was planning a France trip in Sept, but a Germany trip could well be on the cards.

For me the key point is whether Insurance will still be valid (not too bothered about 14 day Q on return) if we transit France directly to Germany (via Belgium)?

Also as we take a dog, has anyone tips on seeing a vet prior to return in Germany so Pet Passport is sorted?

First serious news article I have seen on Croatia going onto the naughty list this morning.

The reason I raise it on here is that France had about a fortnights worth of news that it was in danger of going on and about a weeks worth of news that it was impending before they "only" gave 32 hours notice causing the mad rush.
I dont intend to be involved in that mad rush and would wish to beat HMG to the punch so monitoring to see how long between first set of news and the 32 hours notice to get some idea.
If I were in Croatia now with less than a fortnight to the end of my holiday, I think i would be changing my tunnel return to Thursday at the moment. Remembering I need to avoid Q14 some may not, and this is my guess for me and should not be taken as gospel.

We are in Germany now and have found some great places to stay. Searchforsites is our preferred tool. Very easy to use and locations can be seen on tha app map, google earth and then you can just clipboard the coordinates to satnav, or use the sat nav within the app if wanted.

Interesting to read about Gengenbach as we stayed there at a fantastic stellplatz right on the river, easy walk or bike ride into the town. Not cheap at 14 euros but very clean and tidy. Have then gone on to stay at some fantastic stellplatz since some of them may even be in our bes ever aires/stells. Great surprise for us as we did Mosel last year but really didn’t like it. but this time we are finding some great places.

I understand that traveling through France, or naughty places without stopping then getting on a ferry requires you quarantine, but tunnel doesn’t, even if using pet control.

However Italy has already placed restriction on Croatia so if you plan to return through Italy you have some hoops to jump through!
Vacationers arriving in Italy from Croatia, Greece, Malta or Spain lined up with their suitcases at Leonardo da Vinci airport in Rome to be immediately tested for the new coronavirus on Sunday.

If you want to work out infection rates for germany and austria then this site is very useful for making your own judgement. It updates daily and you would need to scroll down towards the bottom and take the figure on the right hand side as the amount of infections that have happened in the past 14 days. It is a rolling figure.
So Germany today has 13560 infections in the past fortnight. There is a population of 83 million or so. The quickest way of working out the figure the Government quote is 13560 divide by 830 (just add a zero on to the main part of the number) to get the 14 day rolling average per 100,000 people. So todays figures are
Germany 16.3
Austria (9 million population) 22
UK (67 million) 18.5
France (65 million) 42.5
Croatia (4 million) 29.9 (hence the warning in the press and only intend to do Croatia til they go on the naughty list)

I will try to put on a +1.2 or -0.5 for these on a daily basis to help with decision making

I've checked with my health insurer Aviva and the run from tunnel to Germany is not covered but once in Germany I'm covered . Once in German I will remain covered if they go on the no-go list but not if UK government advise Brits to leave ( which is unlikely) IMHO.
